The Big Bach

Paraparaumu, New Zealand 8.4/10

The Big Bach Overview

You know what struck me first about The Big Bach? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it really does feel like staying in someone’s oversized New Zealand bach, just way more polished than your typical family holiday house. I mean, it’s right on Rosetta Road in Raumati South, which honestly took me a minute to figure out when I first booked (it’s about 45 minutes north of Wellington city, but the address says Wellington – typical New Zealand postal quirks).

The location is actually pretty clever if you think about it. You’re close enough to pop into the capital when you want that city buzz, but far enough out that you wake up to proper beach sounds instead of traffic. The Kapiti Coast here is one of those spots that locals have been quietly enjoying for decades while tourists rush past to Rotorua or Queenstown. There’s something refreshing about a 4-star place that doesn’t try to be flashy – the interiors have this relaxed, contemporary vibe that feels authentically Kiwi without beating you over the head with paua shell decorations or fern motifs everywhere.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve nailed the details that matter when you’re actually living in a space for a few days. The beds are properly comfortable (and I’m picky about mattresses), there’s decent water pressure in the showers, and – this might sound silly – but the curtains actually block out light when you want to sleep in. You’d be surprised how many places mess up these basics. The staff genuinely seem to know the area too, not just the standard tourist script. When I asked about good walking spots, they pointed me toward some coastal tracks that weren’t on any of the obvious tourism websites.

Parking is straightforward, which matters more than you’d think around here during summer when the beach crowds descend. The whole property has this unhurried feel – even during what seemed like a busy weekend, it never felt chaotic or rushed. I suspect the 8.4 rating reflects this kind of consistency; it’s not trying to be the flashiest place on the coast, but it delivers on what it promises. The price point feels fair for what you get, especially considering you’re getting proper hotel service in an area where your other options are mostly holiday rentals (which can be hit or miss) or basic motels. If you’re planning to explore this stretch of coast properly – maybe day trips to Kapiti Island or just long beach walks – it makes a solid base that won’t drain your travel budget or leave you dealing with quirky accommodation surprises.

Discover transformative healing hotels that combine ancient wellness traditions with modern therapeutic treatments, providing guests with restorative experiences that rejuvenate both body and mind.

Beautiful setting - just wow! Great book and board game selection.

What could be improved: Damp and smelt damp. Pillows when in bed smelt of dirty hair! Property very tired. Not particularly clean - cups when wanting a coffee needed washing as had bits inside the mugs. Bedding was damp - didn’t sleep well due to feeling the damp and cold. Such a shame as the property could be lovely and in such a wonderful setting.
