The Celtic Manor Resort

You know what struck me first about The Celtic Manor? It’s not actually in Newport proper – it’s tucked away in this lovely spot called Coldra Woods, which honestly feels more like the Welsh countryside than what you’d expect from a city hotel. The moment you drive up that winding approach, you get why they hosted the Ryder Cup here back in 2010. There’s something almost stately about the whole setup, though I mean that in the best possible way.

The thing is, this place has that rare quality where it manages to feel both grand and welcoming at the same time. The lobby’s got these gorgeous views out toward the Usk Valley, and if you’re lucky enough to snag a room facing that direction – well, you’ll understand why people come back here for anniversaries and special occasions. The spa’s actually worth the splurge too, though I’d book treatments early since they fill up fast, especially on weekends. What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to keep the service feeling personal despite being such a large resort. The staff genuinely seem to remember faces, which you don’t always get at five-star places.

Now, I’ll be honest – that 7.7 rating probably reflects a few practical realities. The resort’s sprawling nature means you’ll do quite a bit of walking (pack comfortable shoes), and some of the older rooms could use a refresh, though the newer Manor House sections are absolutely lovely. The restaurants are solid without being spectacular, but honestly, you’re so close to some fantastic local spots that it hardly matters. If you’ve got a car, the position is actually brilliant – you’re maybe twenty minutes from Cardiff, close enough to the M4 that getting around South Wales is easy, but far enough from the motorway that you won’t hear traffic. Just be prepared for the fact that this feels more like a weekend retreat than a quick business stopover, which depending on what you’re after, could be exactly what you want.
