HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what hits you first about The Claremont? It’s that whole “castle on a hill” vibe as you wind up Tunnel Road – I mean, this place has been looming over the Berkeley Hills since 1915, and honestly, it still feels a bit surreal pulling up to those white towers. The valet situation is smooth (thank god, because parking up here would be a nightmare), and you’re immediately in this old-school grand hotel lobby that somehow doesn’t feel stuffy or pretentious.
The rooms are actually really well done – they’ve managed to keep that historic charm without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. What I love is how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re technically still in the Bay Area chaos. The spa is legitimately excellent, not just hotel-spa-decent, and the pool area has these incredible views that stretch all the way to San Francisco on clear days. You’ll want to grab a spot out there in the late afternoon when the light hits the bay just right. The tennis courts are busy but well-maintained, and there’s something oddly satisfying about playing tennis while looking down at UC Berkeley’s campus sprawling below you.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t your typical city hotel experience. You’re kind of removed from everything up here, which is either perfect or slightly inconvenient depending on what you’re after. Getting down to Berkeley proper takes about 10 minutes, and you’re maybe 20-25 minutes from downtown Oakland or the Berkeley BART station. But honestly? That separation is sort of the point. The restaurant (The Bayview) is solid without being mind-blowing, though the Sunday brunch gets packed with locals celebrating anniversaries and birthdays – it’s sweet, actually. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place, which you notice in little ways, like how they remember your name after day two or how the housekeeping is consistently thorough. I will say the 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s definitely a special place with real personality, but it’s not flawless. Some of the rooms could use minor updates (bathroom fixtures that feel a bit dated), and the WiFi can be spotty in certain areas. But there’s something about waking up in those hills, maybe grabbing coffee and walking around the grounds before the day gets crazy, that makes those small things feel pretty insignificant.

Aesthetic. Historic & Gorgeous architecture. Unmatched! The interior spaces (both private & common areas) were decorated in luxe fashion and everwhere the eye could see was beauty & comfort.
