Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Diplomat Beach Resort on South Ocean Drive, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building’s got this sort of retro-modern vibe going on, kind of like someone took a 1960s Miami fever dream and gave it a contemporary makeover. And you know what? It actually works. The lobby hits you with these soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Atlantic perfectly, which is pretty much the whole point of staying here anyway.
What really sets this place apart – and I mean this – is how it manages to feel both polished and relaxed at the same time. The rooms are solid (nothing groundbreaking, but they’ve got that crisp Hilton quality you’d expect), and most importantly, the ocean views deliver. I stayed on the 8th floor facing east, and honestly, waking up to that stretch of Hollywood Beach without the South Beach crowds was worth the splurge alone. The beach itself is wider here than what you’ll find further north, and there’s actually space to breathe during peak season. Pro tip: the northern end near Johnson Street tends to be quieter if you’re trying to avoid the spring break energy.
Here’s the thing about the location that the brochures won’t tell you – you’re right in that sweet spot between Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach where you can easily hit both without dealing with the chaos of staying in either. The Hollywood Broadwalk (yes, with a ‘w’ – locals will correct you on that) is literally right there, and it’s got this old-school charm that feels authentic rather than manufactured. Parking at the hotel will cost you, which is annoying but not surprising for beachfront property. The valet guys are quick though, I’ll give them that. As for dining, the resort’s restaurants are decent but pricey – honestly, you’re better off walking five minutes to some of the family-run spots along Harrison Street where the locals actually eat. The pool area gets pretty busy on weekends, especially when there are events happening, but the beach access more than makes up for it. It’s not perfect – the AC in some rooms runs loud, and don’t expect lightning-fast room service – but there’s something about this place that just feels right for a Florida beach getaway without all the pretense.
