HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what strikes you first about The Equinox? It’s this massive white colonial building that basically owns downtown Manchester – I mean, when you’re driving up Route 7A, you can’t miss it. The thing’s been here since 1769, and honestly, it shows in the best possible way. There’s this old-money Vermont vibe that feels authentic, not like some chain hotel trying to fake historic charm.
The location is actually perfect if you’re planning to do the whole Southern Vermont thing. You’re literally walking distance to the Manchester Designer Outlets (which, let’s be real, is probably why half the guests are here), and Hildene – Lincoln’s son’s estate – is just a few minutes down the road. The golf course is the real draw though, especially if you can handle playing with Mount Equinox looming over you the whole time. It’s gorgeous but sort of intimidating, if that makes sense. The spa’s solid too – I had a hot stone massage after hiking and it was exactly what I needed, though nothing groundbreaking.
Here’s the thing about this place though – it’s definitely showing its age in some ways. Don’t get me wrong, the rooms are comfortable and they’ve clearly put money into renovations, but there are those little quirks you get with older properties. The elevator makes this charming but slightly concerning creaking sound, and some of the room layouts are, well, interesting. But honestly? That’s part of the charm. The staff genuinely seems to care, which you don’t always get at these bigger resorts. Check-in was smooth, parking’s easy (huge relief during leaf peeping season), and they actually remember your name after a day or two. The restaurant’s pretty good – not mind-blowing, but the Sunday brunch is worth it, especially if you can snag a table by those big windows overlooking the mountains. Just know that this isn’t a budget option, and for what you’re paying, you might expect everything to be absolutely flawless. It’s more like staying at your wealthy great-aunt’s estate – comfortable, dignified, with character, but maybe not quite as polished as some of the newer luxury spots. Still, if you want that authentic Vermont resort experience without driving up to Stowe, and you don’t mind paying for the privilege, The Equinox delivers on atmosphere in spades.

The grounds are so beautiful, the location is perfect and access to the Equinox Preserve really made th stay very nice. The staff was very friendly. I really enjoyed the free coffee bar, that really added value. The Falcon Bar was a good palce to have a drink after dinner.
