The Grand @ Taupo

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Grand @ Taupo on Herapeka Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The name sounds a bit fancy for Taupo, you know? But honestly, this place surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away in what locals call the “quiet side” of town, which means you’re close enough to walk to the lake front (maybe 8-10 minutes) but far enough from the main tourist strip that you actually get some peace. The check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that overly cheerful hotel script, just genuine people who actually knew the area.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed the details without trying too hard. The rooms feel… substantial, I guess? Like someone actually thought about how you’d use the space rather than just cramming in hotel furniture. The beds are properly firm (thank god – I’m so tired of sinking into marshmallow mattresses), and they’ve got these thick curtains that actually block out the early summer light when you want to sleep in. You know what I appreciated most though? The shower pressure is fantastic, which matters more than you’d think after a day hiking around the Craters of the Moon or soaking in the hot pools. The whole place runs quiet too – I mean, you might hear the occasional car on Herapeka, but it’s nothing like staying near Tongariro Street where the boy racers cruise at night.

The staff here seem to get that most people aren’t just passing through Taupo – they’re here for the outdoor stuff, the thermal activity, maybe some fishing on the lake. They’ll tell you which walking tracks aren’t overrun with tour groups (try the Spa Park thermal walk early morning), or where to grab decent coffee that isn’t tourist-trap pricing. There’s secure parking right on site, which is clutch during summer when finding a park anywhere near the lake becomes a nightmare. I stayed here twice actually – once in shoulder season when it was perfectly peaceful, and once during the height of summer when everywhere else was absolutely mental with crowds. Both times, The Grand felt like this calm bubble removed from all the chaos. Sure, you’re paying a bit more than some of the older motels around town, but honestly? After years of staying in places where the walls are paper thin and the wifi barely works, I’d rather spend the extra fifty bucks and actually enjoy where I’m sleeping. That 9.6 rating isn’t just tourist reviews being generous – this place genuinely delivers on being a proper base for exploring everything Taupo has to offer.
