Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first pulled up to The Hilton Heritage Resort on that dusty stretch of the Jaisalmer-Sam-Dhanana Road, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, it’s about 40 kilometers out from Jaisalmer city, and you’re basically driving through scrubland and camel farms to get there. But here’s the thing that surprised me: they’ve actually managed to create something pretty special out here in what feels like the middle of nowhere. The resort sits right at the edge of where civilization sort of… fades away into the Thar Desert, and honestly, that isolation is kind of the point. You can actually see the Sam Sand Dunes from some of the rooms – not just a glimpse, but proper views of those golden ridges that shift and change throughout the day.

The property itself has this interesting mix going on where it’s trying to channel traditional Rajasthani architecture (you know, lots of sandstone and carved details) but with modern touches that actually work. The lobby’s got these massive wooden doors that creak in the most satisfying way, and the whole place smells faintly of jasmine and that particular dusty-warm scent that just IS Rajasthan. Now, I’m not going to pretend it’s luxury – it’s a solid 3-star property, and it shows in places like the bathroom fixtures and the slightly temperamental AC units. But the staff here really gets it, especially the guys who organize the desert excursions. They’ll sort you out with camel rides or jeep safaris without the hard sell you get in the main tourist areas of Jaisalmer, and they actually know which dunes are best for sunset viewing (hint: it’s not always the closest ones).

What really won me over, though, was the evening setup. They do this traditional dinner thing out on their terrace – nothing fancy, just good dal-bati-churma and some decent tandoori – but you’re eating under more stars than you’ve probably seen in years. The light pollution out here is basically zero, and on clear nights it’s genuinely spectacular. I ended up staying an extra day just because I couldn’t get enough of those sunsets over the dunes, and the fact that you can walk to the desert edge in about ten minutes from your room. The pool’s decent too, though it gets pretty busy during peak season (October through March), and the water’s sometimes a bit cloudy – but after a day in the desert heat, you honestly won’t care. If you’re looking for that authentic desert experience without completely roughing it, and you don’t mind being a bit removed from the main city action, this place hits a sweet spot. Just make sure you’ve got a decent car for that drive, especially if you’re planning any evening trips back into Jaisalmer proper.
