You know what caught me off guard about The Hotel & Athletic Club at Midtown? It’s actually got this industrial-chic vibe that works way better than it should on paper. I mean, you’re on Elston Avenue – not exactly Michigan Avenue glamour – but that’s sort of the point. The building itself has these exposed brick elements and steel accents that feel authentic to the neighborhood, not like someone just slapped “industrial” in the design brief and called it a day.
The athletic club part isn’t just a fancy name either, which honestly surprised me. There’s a legitimate fitness facility that locals actually use (I saw the same guy there three mornings running), and the pool area has this unexpectedly sophisticated setup with floor-to-ceiling windows. What I really appreciated was how they handled the whole “hotel guests mixing with club members” thing – it never felt awkward or like you were intruding on someone’s routine. The rooms themselves lean modern without being sterile, and here’s something that matters more than you’d think: the soundproofing is solid. Elston can get busy with traffic heading to and from the expressways, but I barely noticed it once I was inside.
Location-wise, you’re in this sweet spot where you can walk to some genuinely good spots in Logan Square and Bucktown – I’m talking about places like Revolution Brewing or Longman & Eagle, not just tourist traps. The 606 trail is close enough for a morning run if that’s your thing, and honestly, being slightly removed from downtown means you get a better feel for how Chicago actually lives. Parking was surprisingly painless (there’s a garage), which anyone who’s driven in Chicago will tell you is worth mentioning. The front desk staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood well – when I asked about late-night food options, the guy didn’t just hand me a generic list but pointed me toward a taco spot on Milwaukee that was exactly what I was craving. That 8.7 rating makes sense when you add it all up – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the city, but everything they do, they do well.
