The Kahala Hotel and Resort

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to The Kahala – it’s tucked away in this super residential neighborhood about 15 minutes from Waikiki, and you’d actually drive right past it if you weren’t looking for the subtle entrance. But man, once you’re through those gates, it’s like stepping into this completely different world. The lobby opens up to these gorgeous ocean views, and there’s this immediate sense of calm that hits you – probably because you can’t hear any of the Honolulu traffic anymore, just waves and maybe some soft Hawaiian music drifting from the bar area.

What really sets this place apart, and I mean this, is how it manages to feel both luxurious and genuinely Hawaiian at the same time. You know how some resort hotels feel like they could be anywhere tropical? Not here. The staff actually knows the island – like, our concierge grew up in Kailua and gave us the most incredible recommendations for hiking Diamond Head early morning (go at 7 AM, trust me) and this little poke spot on Kapahulu Avenue that locals actually eat at. The rooms are beautiful, sure, with those deep soaking tubs and lanais that face either the ocean or the mountains, but it’s the details that got me. Fresh plumeria in the bathroom every day, and the housekeeping team somehow always knew exactly when we’d left so we never had that awkward interruption thing. The dolphin lagoon is pretty special too – I was skeptical at first because it sounds gimmicky, but watching these dolphins play while you’re having your morning coffee is honestly magical. Just don’t expect to swim with them; it’s more of a conservation experience.

The location is actually perfect if you want that resort feeling without being stuck in the Waikiki bubble. Waialae Beach right out front is way quieter than the main tourist beaches, and parking is never an issue (which, if you’ve been to Oahu, you know is huge). The restaurants are legitimately good – Hoku’s does this incredible omakase dinner that’s worth the splurge, and the poolside service doesn’t make you feel like you’re paying resort prices for airport food. I will say, if you’re looking for nightlife or want to walk to tons of shops, you’ll need to Uber into town. But honestly? After a day exploring the island, coming back to this peaceful corner of Kahala Avenue and watching the sunset from their beach felt like exactly what a Hawaii vacation should be. The whole place just breathes this old-school elegance without being stuffy about it.

The resort is perfect. It is in a beautiful location, the rooms and hotel was spotlessly clean, and the staff are all incredible. Slightly further out of Waikiki which we were initially worried about, but there is a free shuttle which runs throughout the day. Direct access to a wonderful beach, and the pool area is also great.

The Kahala is like and old friend,;warm, kind, and beautiful! She is environmentally conscious and sustainable. And...she has a dolphin lagoon!

We had a larger and top floor room, that was great. We could even spot a turtle in the shallow water from there.

The Dolphin encounter was expensive but worth it.

The location was quite reserved and and well situated. The beach was long and beautiful. The rooms were clean with great view of the ocean. Kahala will easily inspire you to reconnect with nature.
