The Kahala Hotel and Resort
The Kahala Hotel and Resort Overview
You know what, I’ve stayed at The Kahala Hotel and Resort twice now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just gets everything right. This five-star gem sits right on Kahala Beach in Honolulu, tucked away from the Waikiki madness but still close enough that you’re not completely isolated. The location is actually perfect – you’re about a 15-minute drive from Diamond Head and maybe 20 minutes from downtown, but you feel like you’re in this serene bubble where the only sounds are waves and the occasional dolphin splash (yes, they actually have dolphins in a lagoon, which sounds touristy but is surprisingly tasteful).
The rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed – I mean, we’re talking about marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and those little touches like plush robes that you’ll want to steal. What I love most is how every room has either an ocean or mountain view, and the balconies are actually big enough to enjoy your morning coffee without feeling cramped. The staff here is genuinely warm (not that forced aloha spirit you sometimes get), and check-in was smooth both times – they even remembered my preference for a higher floor on my second visit. The hotel restaurant, Hoku’s, is legitimately excellent (get the butterfish if it’s available), though honestly, it’s pricey even by Hawaii standards. There’s also a more casual beachside spot called Plumeria Beach House where you can grab decent fish tacos without breaking the bank.
Well, here’s the thing about parking – it’s valet only at $35 a night, which stings a bit, but self-parking isn’t even an option so you’re kind of stuck. The beach is absolutely gorgeous and way less crowded than anything you’ll find in Waikiki, plus the water is calmer here thanks to the reef protection. The spa is solid (I did the lomi lomi massage and nearly fell asleep), though again, expect to pay premium prices. If you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll need to venture out – this place is more about relaxation than partying. The pool area can get busy during peak season (December through March), but mornings are always peaceful. One small gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in some areas, which is annoying when you’re trying to upload those sunset photos. But honestly, maybe that’s a blessing in disguise – this is the kind of place where you should probably disconnect anyway. The whole vibe here is understated luxury, and it really delivers on that promise without feeling stuffy or pretentious.

The resort is perfect. It is in a beautiful location, the rooms and hotel was spotlessly clean, and the staff are all incredible. Slightly further out of Waikiki which we were initially worried about, but there is a free shuttle which runs throughout the day. Direct access to a wonderful beach, and the pool area is also great.

As a return visitor, I love the Kahala for its open and airy spaces, wonderful neighborhood, friendly and prompt service, and standout hotel bathroom.

The Kahala is like and old friend,;warm, kind, and beautiful! She is environmentally conscious and sustainable. And...she has a dolphin lagoon!
Erwin from Germany
We had a larger and top floor room, that was great. We could even spot a turtle in the shallow water from there.
The Dolphin encounter was expensive but worth it.

The location was quite reserved and and well situated. The beach was long and beautiful. The rooms were clean with great view of the ocean. Kahala will easily inspire you to reconnect with nature.
