The Prince Hakone Lake Ashinoko Overview
You know what struck me first about The Prince Hakone Lake Ashinoko? It’s not trying to be anything other than what it is – a solid lakefront hotel that actually delivers on the whole “wake up to Mount Fuji” promise. I mean, when the weather cooperates (and honestly, it’s pretty hit-or-miss with the fog rolling in off Ashinoko), the view from the lake-facing rooms is legitimately stunning.
The location is sort of perfect if you’re doing the classic Hakone loop. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the pirate ship dock – yeah, those touristy boats that everyone takes but are actually kind of fun – and the old Hakone Checkpoint is right there too. What I really appreciated though was how they’ve managed to feel separated from all the tour bus chaos that happens around Motohakone during the day. Once you’re on the property, especially out on their lakeside terrace, it’s surprisingly peaceful. The building itself has that understated Japanese elegance thing going on without being too precious about it. Check-in was smooth (they’re used to international guests, which helps), and the staff actually seemed to know the area well enough to give decent recommendations beyond the obvious tourist spots.
Here’s the thing about staying here – the rooms are comfortable but not fancy, which honestly felt right for Hakone. You’re not here to hang out in your room anyway. The onsen facilities are probably the real draw, especially the outdoor bath where you can soak while looking out at the lake. I went early morning and had it mostly to myself, which was pretty magical with the mist coming off the water. The hotel gets busy with day-trippers using the onsen, so timing matters if you want a quieter experience. Food-wise, the breakfast buffet was better than expected – good mix of Western and Japanese options, though nothing groundbreaking. For dinner, I’d actually suggest walking into Motohakone proper (maybe 10 minutes) where there are some solid local spots, unless you’re really tired from hiking or just want to stay put. One heads up – if you’re driving, parking can get tight during peak seasons, and the roads around here get pretty congested on weekends. The train-and-bus route is honestly easier, and you end up right at their doorstep anyway. Overall, it’s exactly what a good Hakone hotel should be – comfortable, well-located, and focused on letting you enjoy what you actually came here for, which is soaking in hot springs while staring at Japan’s most famous mountain.
