The Prince Karuizawa Overview

You know what struck me first about The Prince Karuizawa? The lobby doesn’t try to scream “luxury” at you – it’s this understated elegance that feels distinctly Japanese, with these massive windows framing the forest like living artwork. I mean, you’re literally surrounded by trees here, which is exactly what you want when you’re escaping Tokyo’s madness for Karuizawa’s mountain air.

The location is honestly perfect if you know the area. You’re tucked away from the main Karuizawa shopping district (which gets pretty touristy, especially during peak foliage season), but it’s still an easy walk to the outlet mall if that’s your thing. What I really loved was being close enough to the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza for convenience, but far enough that you don’t hear the crowds. The hotel sits on this sprawling property where you can actually hear birds in the morning – not something you’d expect from a place that gets as busy as this one does during summer and autumn.

The rooms have this clean, modern vibe that somehow still feels warm, probably because of all the natural wood they use. My room had a balcony overlooking the golf course (which, honestly, is gorgeous even if you don’t play), and there’s something really calming about watching the early morning mist roll across those perfectly manicured greens. The bathrooms are typically Japanese in the best way – everything works flawlessly, the tub is deep enough to actually soak in, and the toiletries smell like hinoki cypress. One small thing that impressed me: the Wi-Fi actually works well throughout the property, which isn’t always a given in mountain resort areas.

What really sets this place apart is how it handles the seasons. I visited in late October, and they had this whole autumn illumination thing happening in the evenings – not cheesy, just subtle lighting that made the fall colors pop. The staff mentioned they do different seasonal activities throughout the year, and you can tell they really think about creating experiences rather than just providing a place to sleep. The restaurant situation is solid too – you’ve got options on-site, but you’re also positioned well to explore some of Karuizawa’s better local spots if you want to venture out.

Look, it’s not cheap, and the 8.3 rating makes sense because there are little things that could be better – check-in can be slow during peak times, and some of the common areas show their age despite the renovations. But honestly? If you’re looking for that classic wellness retreat experience where you can actually relax and feel connected to the natural setting, this hits the mark.

It’s especially great if you’re coming from somewhere hectic and want to decompress without feeling like you’re completely in the middle of nowhere. The Prince Karuizawa gets that balance right.

What could be improved: The decor in our room was a little worn but everything worked perfectly.

Breakfast is amazing whilst the service level of the staff is wonderful. The facilities are a bit tiring but provides good comfort. Love the walk in the surrounding area. Great for a short bike ride.

What could be improved: The overall hotel and rooms may need upgrading. The welcoming drink idea is great but the area serving it is quite packed with customers.

What could be improved: Everything is suuuuper complicated . They said they would let me pay online . Didn’t . They made me do bookings for skiing and spa in some obscure webpages in Japanese . Took ages to respond to e mails .
My guests were not happy.
The lessons are in one reception but the rentals in another and no one answers or gives directions, they don’t speak English .
Should say they are a hotel just for locals maybe

The property itself is beautiful with fireplace. The free drinks and snacks at the library lounge is nice. The provide free transport to n from the ski centre.

What could be improved: it’s the furthest Prince chain hotel away from the station. You have to wait for the shuttle bus or call a cab. No drinks provided in the room as you have to have them in the library lounge. Minimal restaurant selection. No convenience store like the Prince West, no laundromat, no hot spring.

Free access to hot spring though need to take the shuttle. The hotel complex is big with a very good outlet.

What could be improved: If you wish to stay close to F&B and hot spring, better stay at the West.
