HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what hits you first when you pull up to The Rajbari Bawali? It’s not just another heritage hotel trying too hard to be fancy – this place actually feels like you’re stepping into someone’s ancestral home, which, honestly, you kind of are. Located in South 24 Parganas near Bawali High School, it’s about an hour’s drive from central Kolkata, and I mean, the journey itself sets you up perfectly because you’re literally watching the city fade into these gorgeous rural landscapes.

The thing about Rajbari Bawali is that it gets the whole heritage experience right without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms – and I’m talking about those massive suites with original wooden floors that creak just enough to remind you of the building’s age – they’ve got this perfect balance of old-world charm and actual comfort. The bathrooms are modern (thank god), but they’ve kept details like the original jharokhas and these incredible hand-painted walls that look like they took months to restore. What really got me was walking around at dusk when the staff lights up all these traditional oil lamps – suddenly you’re not just staying at a hotel, you’re living in this slice of Bengal’s zamindari history.

Here’s what nobody tells you though: the food situation is absolutely next level. They grow a lot of their own vegetables on the property, and their kitchen team does this incredible job with traditional Bengali dishes that you honestly can’t find in most Kolkata restaurants anymore. I had this fish curry that the chef said was his grandmother’s recipe, and well – I believed him. The dining happens in this gorgeous courtyard area, and during winter evenings (which is definitely when you want to visit), they set up these low tables with bolsters, very traditional style. Parking’s never an issue since you’re basically in the countryside, and the check-in process is refreshingly personal – they actually sit you down with tea and walk you through the property’s history. The 8.3 rating makes total sense because while everything’s beautifully done, you’re not in the city, so if you need urban conveniences or nightlife, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to disconnect and experience what aristocratic Bengal life might have felt like – complete with morning walks through their organic gardens and evening cultural performances in the central courtyard – then honestly, this place delivers something pretty special.

We loved multiple things. First, there was the food. The spread of items wasn't exceptional to be honest but what really stood out was the quality of the ingredients and the cooking. It didn't matter whether we were tucking into the zamindari thali at lunch or the kebabs in the evening or even the Asian for dinner. Everything, including breakfast the following morning, was fantastic. The stand out item for us though was the kochupata chingri.

We also loved the friendliness of the staff. Always smiling and most importantly, nearly every single one of them knew something or the other about the history of the 400 yr old property, ranging from the little info about how the temple of Dakshineswar was inspired by the temple (also built by Rani Rashmoni before Dakshineswar) outside the rajbari, the films that have been shot at the location (Ray's Jalsaghar, Guru Dutt's Saheb Biwi Ghulam or the more recent Bulbul).

Finally, a word on the bartending skills of Kanji and Abhishek. Absolutely brilliant! Loved the gondhoraj cosmopolitan and the whisky sour that we ordered. My second drink was a bartender's special with whisky orange juice, triple sec and some other stuff. Fabulous is the word. I'd also like to call out some staff members who were superb - Nibedita and Subhojit.

Last but not the least, I loved the fact that the valet had cooled our car a bit before bringing it to us. Attention to detail was incredible.
