HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to The Ritz-Carlton at Turtle Bay – I mean, it’s way up on the North Shore, about an hour from Waikiki, which feels like you’re driving to another island entirely. But the moment you turn off Kamehameha Highway and see that sweeping coastline unfold in front of you, you get it. This isn’t just another fancy hotel plopped down somewhere convenient; it’s actually built into one of the most dramatic stretches of O’ahu’s coast.

The thing that struck me right away was how the property feels both polished and genuinely Hawaiian at the same time. You know how some luxury resorts can feel like they could be anywhere? Not here. The lobby opens completely to ocean views, and there’s this constant sound of waves that’s way more impressive than the typical Hawaiian hotel soundtrack – we’re talking about legitimate North Shore surf, the kind that brings pro surfers from around the world during winter months. The staff actually knows the local breaks and can tell you when Pipeline or Sunset Beach are firing (which, if you’re into surfing or even just watching it, is worth timing your stay around). The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from Ritz-Carlton – spacious, impeccably clean, with those little touches that justify the price point. But the real sell is stepping onto your lanai and realizing you’re looking at some of the most pristine coastline on the island. I stayed in November and watched humpback whales breaching right from my balcony, which honestly made me feel a bit ridiculous for ever complaining about hotel views before.

What I didn’t expect was how much I’d end up loving the location’s relative isolation. Sure, you’re not walking to Duke’s Waikiki for a mai tai, but you’re also not dealing with the crowds and tour buses that can make parts of Waikiki feel like a theme park. Instead, you’re a short drive from Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck (get the scampi, trust me), Haleiwa town for actual local shopping, and some of the best beaches on the island that most tourists never see. The hotel’s beach is pretty spectacular too – wide, clean, and usually not packed since it takes some effort to get here. Evening walks along the shore become this almost meditative thing, especially during sunset when the light hits the Ko’olau Mountains just right. The service lives up to the Ritz reputation without feeling stuffy – they remember your name, your coffee order, and somehow always have exactly what you need before you realize you need it. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to spend time at the hotel instead of just using it as a base, which is saying something when you’re in Hawaii.

Two very different places but for us if you are going to the island we wanted to enjoy the natural beauty. The hotel has a great vibe and has lots to choose from. A number of different activities, great gym, lovely walks around the surrounding area, some nice shops and a number of different of eating options. Definitely book ahead if you are going at a busy time as the beach restaurant as an example gets booked out quickly. Bookings are on “Open table.” Rooms were lovely and really well designed.
