Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to THE ROOT2 HOTEL, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s tucked away on this quiet street in Minami-ku, and honestly, if you’re not paying attention you might walk right past it. But that’s actually part of its charm, you know? While everyone’s cramming into those massive chain hotels near Kyoto Station, you’re staying in this intimate spot that feels more like a well-kept secret.
The thing about this place is its location – and I mean the real location, not just “convenient to everything” nonsense. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Toji Temple, which most tourists rush through during the day, but here’s what they don’t tell you: early morning there is absolutely magical. I’m talking mist rising off the pagoda, maybe three other people around, the whole deal. The hotel staff actually mentioned the best times to visit without the crowds, which tells you they really know their neighborhood. Plus you’ve got the monthly flea market at Toji on the 21st – if you time your stay right, it’s this incredible sprawling market that locals have been going to for decades.
What really got me though was how the hotel balances that modern comfort with… I don’t know, not trying too hard? The rooms are clean and thoughtfully designed without being sterile, and the staff genuinely seems to care about your experience rather than just checking boxes. I mean, the 8.4 rating makes sense when you stay there – it’s not perfect (the walls could be a bit thicker, and parking can be tricky during peak season), but it gets the important stuff right. The neighborhood itself is wonderfully quiet at night, which is something you really appreciate after a day of temple-hopping and fighting crowds in Gion. You’re close enough to catch the train into the main tourist areas, but when you come back in the evening, you feel like you’re actually staying somewhere with character rather than just another hotel room. It’s that sweet spot where you get modern amenities without feeling like you could be anywhere in the world, if that makes sense.
