Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of beachfront hotels in Florida, and The Shores Resort & Spa honestly surprised me in the best way. You pull up to this sleek building on South Atlantic Avenue – it’s right there where the road curves and you get that first glimpse of the ocean – and it just feels more upscale than half the touristy spots cluttering up Daytona Beach. The valet actually seemed happy to be there, which is saying something during peak season.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to feel both polished and relaxed at the same time. I mean, you’ve got this gorgeous spa (I splurged on a massage and zero regrets) and a pool area that doesn’t feel like a crowded water park, but you can still walk out in flip-flops without anyone giving you looks. The oceanfront rooms – and trust me, spring for one if you can – have these floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Atlantic perfectly. You know what I loved? You can actually open them. So many hotels seal you in with recycled air, but here you get those real ocean sounds and that salt breeze, especially nice in the early morning before the beach gets crazy with spring breakers or race fans.
Speaking of location, you’re positioned perfectly between the chaos of the main boardwalk area and the quieter residential stretch heading toward Ponce Inlet. Walk north five minutes and you hit all the typical Daytona Beach action – which is fun for a night out – but walk south and it’s way more chill. The hotel’s restaurant is actually decent (the grouper was fresh, clearly local), though honestly, you’re so close to some great little places like Racing’s North Turn that you’d be missing out if you didn’t explore. Parking was surprisingly painless – they’ve got their own garage, which matters more than you’d think when the speedway events roll around and everything else becomes a nightmare. The only minor thing that bugged me was the elevator situation during busy times, but that’s pretty standard for any decent-sized hotel here. Overall, it’s got that sweet spot vibe where you feel like you’re staying somewhere special without the stuffiness, and the 8.4 rating makes total sense once you’re there.
