The Spire Hotel

Queenstown, New Zealand 9.5/10

The Spire Hotel Overview

Okay, so The Spire Hotel – honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked down Church Lane because, let’s be real, Queenstown has a lot of fancy places that promise the world. But this one actually delivers, and I mean that in the best possible way. The building itself has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look at me” like some of the newer developments along the waterfront, but once you’re inside, you get it. The lobby has these incredible floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Lake Wakatipu perfectly, and the staff genuinely seems happy to see you – not that forced hospitality thing you get at some five-star places.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to make a luxury hotel feel… well, not stuffy. The rooms are gorgeous (mine had this amazing view toward The Remarkables), but more importantly, everything just works. The shower pressure is fantastic – and trust me, after a day hiking Ben Lomond, that matters. The beds are ridiculously comfortable, though I’ll admit the first night I was kept awake by some late-night revelers heading back from Cowlane, but that’s Queenstown for you, especially during ski season. They’ve got proper blackout curtains though, which saved me when the summer sun decided to wake up at 5:30 AM. The little touches are what set it apart – like how they stock the minibar with local Central Otago wines and actually decent coffee (not that instant stuff), plus there’s this gorgeous marble bathroom that somehow manages to stay warm even in winter.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned without being in the absolute chaos of Shotover Street. It’s maybe a three-minute walk to Fergburger if you’re into that scene, but you can also slip down to the quieter end of the lake for morning walks before the tour groups descend. Parking can be a bit tricky – they have valet service, but if you’re driving yourself around the region like I was, just know that Church Lane gets pretty narrow. The concierge team knows their stuff too; they pointed me toward some incredible lesser-known wineries in Gibbston Valley that I never would have found otherwise. I stayed during shoulder season in April, and honestly, it was perfect – still warm enough for outdoor dining, but without the summer crowds. The restaurant downstairs is pricey (what isn’t in Queenstown?), but their breakfast overlooking the lake is worth splurging on at least once. If you’re looking for that sweet spot between genuine luxury and actually feeling like you’re in New Zealand rather than some generic international hotel, The Spire nails it.
