The Vineyard Hotel & Spa Overview

First Impressions

You know what strikes you first about The Vineyard Hotel & Spa? It’s not trying too hard to impress — and that’s exactly what makes it so impressive. Tucked away in the Berkshire countryside near Newbury, this five-star retreat feels like someone’s incredibly sophisticated country estate rather than a hotel. The moment you pull into the property (thank goodness for the free parking, honestly), you’re surrounded by rolling vineyards and that particular English countryside quiet that money can’t usually buy. The estate spans across pristine acres of carefully maintained grounds, where ancient oak trees frame pathways that wind through meticulously planned gardens.

The Rooms

I’ll be straight with you — the beds here are genuinely exceptional. There’s something about sinking into Egyptian cotton sheets after a day exploring the Downs that just works perfectly. Each room feels individually designed rather than cookie-cutter luxury, with thoughtful touches like locally-sourced bath products and views that actually matter. The couples who rave about this place (they rated the location 9.1, which honestly seems low) aren’t wrong — there’s something inherently romantic about waking up to vineyard views and that soft English morning light. Every accommodation features bespoke furnishings, handpicked artwork, and modern amenities seamlessly integrated into classic English design elements.

Dining and Atmosphere

The restaurant here deserves its own conversation. Chef Peter Creed has created something special — modern British cuisine that doesn’t feel forced or pretentious. You’re eating ingredients that were probably growing within a few miles of your table, prepared with the kind of technique that makes you actually pause mid-conversation. The wine list, naturally, features their own vintages alongside carefully chosen bottles that complement the seasonal menu beautifully. Guests consistently praise the culinary experience and the thoughtful pairing of wines with each course. The dining room itself overlooks the working vineyard, creating an immersive experience where you can watch the seasons change through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Spa Experience

Now, about that spa — it’s not one of those overwhelming temple-to-wellness places that can feel intimidating. Instead, it’s intimate and genuinely restorative. The treatments incorporate local ingredients (I mean, you’re literally surrounded by grapes), and the therapists actually know what they’re doing. The solarium is perfect for those unpredictable English weather days when you want to feel like you’re outdoors without the chill. Many visitors return specifically for the signature treatments and the peaceful atmosphere. The facility includes thermal suites, relaxation pools, and treatment rooms designed to maximize the connection with the surrounding natural landscape.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is its authentic connection to the landscape. You’re not just staying at a luxury hotel that happens to be in the countryside — you’re experiencing a working vineyard that happens to offer exceptional hospitality. The golf course nearby is genuinely good (not just hotel-decent), and those temporary art galleries add an unexpected cultural dimension that keeps return visits interesting. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself extending your stay, not because there’s so much to do, but because there’s so much space to simply be. The combination of natural beauty, refined amenities, and genuine warmth creates an unforgettable retreat that consistently exceeds expectations.

Bit like a ‘Swan’. Gracefully & effortlessly immaculate whilst ‘underneath the water’ they must be paddling like mad to keep this looking as pristine as it appears.

Well trained and plenty of staff. They greeted me by name at the door and walked us to our room explaining the hotel. There were tears in the room for my birthday. The spa has mixed sauna and steam so unlike Champneys couples can go to these facilities together. Towels, gowns, slippers provided.
Nice artwork rather than usual hotel prints.
Light and bright.
Dog friendly with bed, dog treats and bowls provided.
You got 3 spa experiences for a 2 night stay. Booked a half hour massage, not many minute slots so book ahead, the massage was great.
Nearby, Hungerford has a lot of antique shops and a wonderful cafe called Eliane where I had a really lovely vegan brunch. From there a good walk along the canal to Kintbury, where you can wait in the pub to get the train back.
