HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to The Wigwam – I mean, the name alone makes you wonder if you’re about to stay in some kitschy desert theme park. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s one of those old-school Arizona resorts that’s been around since the 1920s, and you can feel that history the moment you walk into the lobby. The whole property sits on this sprawling piece of land in Litchfield Park (which, let’s be real, most people have never heard of unless they live in the west Valley), and it’s got this authentic Southwest vibe without feeling like someone just slapped some cacti and cow skulls everywhere.

What really gets me about The Wigwam is how they’ve managed to keep it feeling like a proper resort without going overboard. The casitas are spread out across the property – and I mean really spread out, so bring comfortable shoes or be prepared for some walking. Each one has this adobe-style architecture that actually works with the desert landscape instead of fighting it. The rooms themselves are solid, nothing revolutionary but clean and comfortable with those thick walls that keep things surprisingly quiet even when your neighbors are being… well, neighbors. The golf courses here are the real deal too – three of them, actually – and you’ll see serious golfers out there at dawn trying to beat the heat. Pro tip: if you’re not into golf, the early morning walks around the courses are pretty spectacular, especially in winter when the snowbirds haven’t completely taken over yet.

You know what I really appreciate about this place? It doesn’t try to be something it’s not. The pool area gets busy during peak season (basically October through April), but there’s enough space that you’re not fighting for chairs if you’re smart about timing. The spa is tucked away in this quiet corner where you can actually hear yourself think, and the restaurants – well, they’re resort restaurants, so temper your expectations accordingly, but the patio dining is lovely when the weather cooperates. The staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing, which isn’t always a given at these bigger properties. Parking is easy and free, check-in was smooth, and they seem to have figured out that little details matter. I mean, it’s not perfect – the WiFi can be spotty in some of the farther casitas, and if you’re looking for nightlife, you’re better off heading into Scottsdale. But for what it is – a relaxed desert retreat where you can decompress without feeling like you’re roughing it – The Wigwam delivers. It’s the kind of place that grows on you, especially if you give it more than just a quick overnight stay.
