Tokinoniwa Overview
You know what struck me first about Tokinoniwa? The name itself – it literally means “garden of time,” and honestly, that’s exactly what this place feels like. Tucked away on a quiet stretch in Kusatsu’s Shirane area, it’s one of those hotels where you actually lose track of the hours, which is pretty much the point when you’re in Japan’s most famous onsen town.
I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t some flashy resort trying to wow you with marble lobbies. Tokinoniwa feels more like staying at a really well-appointed traditional inn that happens to have modern sensibilities. The building itself sits back from the main tourist drag (you know, where all the souvenir shops and ramen joints cluster around Yubatake hot spring field), so you get that authentic residential Japan feeling without being completely cut off from the action. Walking to the famous sulfur springs takes maybe eight minutes, and honestly, that little stroll through the neighborhood streets is half the charm – you’ll pass local houses with their tiny immaculate gardens and probably encounter some of those elderly Japanese folks who wave at foreigners like you’re long-lost relatives.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve nailed that balance between traditional ryokan vibes and actual comfort. The rooms have that clean, minimalist aesthetic you’d expect, but the futons are actually good quality (I mean, some places just throw down a thin mattress and call it authentic), and the bathrooms are surprisingly spacious. The onsen facilities are the real draw though – they source their water from the same volcanic springs that put Kusatsu on the map centuries ago, and soaking in those mineral-rich baths after a day of wandering around town is pretty much mandatory. Pro tip: the outdoor bath is incredible in winter when there’s snow on the surrounding trees, but even in summer it’s lovely in the early morning when the air is still cool.
The staff here actually seem to enjoy their jobs, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They’re genuinely helpful with restaurant recommendations (there’s this tiny tempura place about ten minutes away that they told me about – no English menu but incredible food), and they don’t make you feel rushed during check-in or like you’re bothering them with questions. Parking is free and right on-site, which is clutch because finding parking in central Kusatsu can be a nightmare, especially during autumn when everyone comes for the fall colors.
Look, with an 8.7 rating, Tokinoniwa clearly does something right, and after staying there I get it. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone – it’s just a really solid, authentic place to experience Japanese onsen culture without the tourist circus atmosphere. The location gives you easy access to hiking trails up Mount Shirane when you want adventure, but also lets you retreat into that peaceful “garden of time” when you need to decompress. For a 4-star place, it definitely overdelivers on that whole “hidden gem” feeling that’s gotten pretty hard to find in Japan these days.
Discover transformative healing hotels that combine ancient wellness traditions with modern therapeutic treatments, providing guests with restorative experiences that rejuvenate both body and mind.

We absolutely loved our stay here! The staff were very kind and courteous. I don’t like it when tourists complain that the staff doesn’t speak much English — you visited a FOREIGN country that you know don’t have much English speakers so stop...
The both public and private outdoor baths was extremely relaxing and peaceful. Plenty of amenities in the room, including complementary drinks, tea, and snacks. Nice lounge area. Hotel shuttle bus to the hotel and station was very convenient. What...
Everything was exceptional! We used the bath in our room, and all 3 of the open air private baths and all exceeded expectations. Everything and everyone was extraordinary in their service and helpfulness. What could be improved: 1. Their website was...
A ryoukan located a bit away from the center of kusatsu onsen. It has a shuttle that departs from yhr station in the morning/afternoon and in the evening it goes from the center of kusatsu to the ryoukan. We stayed there without food and we went to...
