Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama Musubinoyu

506-0026 Gifu, Takayama, Hanasatomachi 4-301, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what really caught me off guard about Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama Musubinoyu? The name’s a mouthful, sure, but this place actually lives up to its fancy title. I mean, “musubinoyu” translates to something like “connecting hot springs,” and honestly – that’s exactly what it feels like. It’s this perfect middle ground between the tourist chaos of central Takayama and the authentic ryokan experience you’re probably craving.
The location on Hanasatomachi is pretty smart, actually. You’re far enough from the morning market crowds (trust me, you’ll hear them at 6 AM if you stay closer to the river), but still walkable to everything that matters. Takes maybe eight minutes to reach Sanmachi Suji’s preserved streets, and there’s this little convenience store right around the corner that locals use – which is always a good sign. The building itself has that modern Japanese hotel efficiency thing down pat, but with warmer touches than your typical business hotel. Check-in was smooth, staff spoke decent English, and they actually seemed to know the area well enough to give real recommendations, not just point you toward the obvious tourist spots.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to blend the onsen experience with modern comfort. The rooms have this clean, uncluttered feel – very much in that Japanese minimalist style, but not cold or sterile. You’ll find a proper kitchenette setup if you want to grab ingredients from the morning market (which, honestly, is half the fun of staying in Takayama). The hot spring baths are the real highlight though. They’re not huge or dramatic like some of the resort onsen you might hit in Hakone, but there’s something really satisfying about soaking after a day of temple-hopping or hiking around the Higashiyama walking course. The water’s got that slightly sulfurous smell that tells you it’s the real deal, and the outdoor bath gives you this nice view of the surrounding mountains – especially gorgeous if you catch it during sunset.
I stayed here in late autumn when the leaves were turning, and the whole experience felt perfectly timed. Mornings were crisp enough that the onsen felt essential, not just nice-to-have. The area gets pretty quiet after dinner time, which is either perfect for unwinding or slightly boring, depending on what you’re after. Parking was straightforward if you’re driving (and honestly, having a car opens up so much more of the Hida region), though you’ll want to reserve a spot ahead of time during peak seasons. The breakfast spread was solid – mix of Western and Japanese options, with really good local miso soup that actually tasted like someone’s grandmother made it. Not groundbreaking, but satisfying after you’ve worked up an appetite exploring Takayama’s sake breweries the night before. At this price point and with that 8.8 rating, it makes sense – you’re getting genuine comfort and that onsen experience without paying resort prices.
