Topnotch Resort

Topnotch Resort Overview
You know what struck me first about Topnotch Resort? The moment you pull up that winding Mountain Road – and I mean, it’s actually a proper mountain road with those Vermont curves that make your ears pop – there’s this immediate sense that you’ve escaped somewhere real. Not one of those places that tries too hard to feel rustic, but actually sits naturally in the landscape like it belongs there.
The thing about Stowe is that most people think of it as just a ski destination, but honestly, Topnotch gets the year-round appeal right. I’ve been there in both summer and winter, and the vibe completely transforms – which is actually pretty cool. In winter, sure, you’ve got that whole alpine lodge atmosphere with people stomping around in snow boots and the fireplace going constantly. But summer? That’s when you realize the spa isn’t just an afterthought. The outdoor pools feel almost secret, tucked into the mountainside, and you can hear the stream running nearby. It’s one of those details that makes you think someone actually planned this place for relaxation, not just Instagram shots.
The rooms are solid – I mean, they’ve clearly been updated without losing that Vermont charm. None of that sterile hotel feeling, but the WiFi actually works (always a gamble in mountain towns) and the beds are properly comfortable. What I really appreciate is how they handle the whole “resort” thing without making you feel trapped. You’re maybe ten minutes from Stowe village if you want to grab dinner somewhere else, and the shuttle actually runs on time – small thing, but you know how these resort shuttles can be. The staff seems to stick around, which always tells you something about how a place treats people. They remember you if you’ve been there before, and they know the area well enough to give you actual recommendations instead of just pointing you toward the obvious tourist spots.
Look, it’s not perfect – the dining can feel a bit pricey even for Vermont standards, and if you’re here during peak foliage or ski season, it definitely gets busy. But there’s something about the way Topnotch sits in that valley that just works. Maybe it’s because they didn’t try to build the biggest or flashiest place – they just found a good spot and made it comfortable. The spa is legitimately good (I’m usually skeptical of hotel spas), and the tennis courts are actually maintained, which is rarer than you’d think. Plus, if you’re into hiking, there are trails that connect right from the property – not just the marked tourist ones, but actual mountain paths where you might not see another person for hours.
It’s the kind of place that makes sense for a long weekend when you want to feel like you’re away without having to fly somewhere or deal with a big city. The 8.6 rating feels about right – it’s genuinely good at what it does, just not trying to be everything to everyone.

We didn't have breakfast at the resort.
In the evening we had some bar snacks with drinks and they were very nice. The ambience in the bar area was great and we enjoyed playing shuffle whilst we had a drink.
