Tres Continentes Overview
So you know how most hotels in the mountains feel either too rustic or weirdly corporate? Tres Continentes actually gets the balance right. I mean, the location alone – you’re basically on the road to El Volcán in San José de Maipo, which sounds dramatic but honestly, it’s this perfect spot where you can still get decent cell service (most of the time) while feeling properly removed from Santiago’s chaos.
The thing that struck me first was how quiet it gets at night. Not dead quiet – you’ll hear the Maipo River if you listen for it, and sometimes there’s this gentle wind that moves through the valley. The rooms are solid for a 4-star place, nothing fancy but they’ve got those thick curtains that actually block out the morning sun, which is clutch if you’re trying to sleep in after a day of hiking. The heating works well too, and trust me, you’ll want that once the sun goes down – even in summer, it gets properly cool up here. Check-in was smooth when I went, though I’d call ahead during ski season because the staff mentioned things get pretty hectic then.
What really won me over was the breakfast situation. They do this spread with local stuff – real manjar, not the processed kind, and bread that’s clearly from somewhere nearby. The coffee’s actually good, which honestly surprised me because mountain hotels can be hit or miss with basics like that. You can eat outside on the terrace when weather permits, and the view stretches across the valley in this way that makes you want to linger over your second cup. The staff genuinely knows the area too – they pointed me toward this hiking trail that doesn’t show up on most tourist maps, and it ended up being the highlight of my trip. Parking’s easy, by the way, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with mountain roads and rental cars. The whole place has this laid-back vibe that feels authentically Chilean rather than trying to be some international mountain resort. It’s the kind of spot where you end up staying an extra night because leaving feels like too much effort, and I mean that in the best possible way.
