But honestly, this place won me over completely, and I say that as someone who’s pretty picky about hotels. The drive down from Glasgow takes about an hour and a half, and you’ll wind through some gorgeous Scottish countryside before hitting the Ayrshire coast. When you finally pull up that long driveway, the hotel just sits there majestically on the cliffs overlooking the Firth of Clyde – it’s actually stunning in a way that photos don’t quite capture.

The thing about Turnberry is that it feels properly Scottish grand, not like some generic luxury chain. I mean, the golf course is legendary (even if you’re not into golf, you can appreciate how ridiculously beautiful it is), and the spa is actually fantastic – they do this thing with locally sourced seaweed that sounds weird but feels amazing. The rooms are spacious in that old-school way where you can actually walk around your suitcase, and if you get one facing the sea, you’ll spend way too much time just staring out the windows. The restaurant situation is solid too – their seafood comes straight from the local boats in Girvan, which is just down the road. Fair warning though: dinner can get pretty pricey, but the quality matches what you’re paying.

What really sets this place apart is the location – you’re basically in the middle of nowhere in the best possible way. Ailsa Craig (that volcanic island you can see from your window) looks different every time the light changes, and on clear days you can spot the Isle of Arran. The staff genuinely know the area well, so they’ll point you toward hidden gems like the ruins of Crossraguel Abbey or tell you the best time to walk down to the lighthouse. Check-in was smooth, parking is free and easy, and honestly, the whole experience feels like staying at a proper Scottish estate rather than just another fancy hotel. Yes, it’s expensive, but sometimes you want to splurge on something that actually delivers on the luxury promise – and this place definitely does that.
