You know what struck me first about Uday Backwater Resort? The absolute quiet. I mean, you’re technically still in Alleppey, but once you turn into Avlukkunnu – which honestly took me two tries to find because the signage isn’t great – it’s like the chaos of the main town just… disappears. The resort sits right on the edge of Punnamada Lake, and I’m talking literally waterfront here, not some “water view if you crane your neck” situation.

The whole place has this sprawling, almost residential feel to it. Actually, that makes sense because a lot of these backwater properties started as family compounds before becoming resorts. You’ll notice it in the way the rooms are scattered around instead of stacked in some concrete block – mine was basically a standalone cottage with this massive veranda that looked straight out over the water. The interiors are what you’d expect from a 5-star place, though honestly, the real luxury is stepping outside your door and being maybe thirty feet from where the houseboats drift by. Pro tip: the morning mist rolling off the water around 6 AM is something else, but pack mosquito repellent because those little guys are relentless at dawn and dusk.

What really sets this place apart – and why I’d go back despite the slightly inflated prices – is how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Kerala backwater vibe while still giving you proper amenities. The restaurant serves actual regional specialties (try the karimeen if they have it), not some watered-down tourist version, and the staff genuinely knows the area. They arranged a canoe trip for me through some of the narrower channels that the big houseboats can’t access, which was absolutely worth it. The only real downside? It gets pretty busy during peak season (December through February), and since there are only about twenty rooms total, book way ahead if you’re planning a winter visit. Also, the WiFi is spotty in some of the waterfront cottages – not necessarily a bad thing if you’re trying to disconnect, but worth knowing if you need to stay connected. The whole experience feels less like staying at a hotel and more like crashing at a well-connected local friend’s incredibly nice house, which I suppose is exactly what you want when you’re exploring the backwaters.
