When I first arrived at Upavan Resort, honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how dramatically the landscape would shift as we wound through the Western Ghats toward Vythiri. The drive to Lakkidi — they call it the “Gateway to Wayanad” — is something else entirely, with mist rolling through valleys that seem to stretch forever. This five-star retreat sits at about 2,100 feet above sea level, and you feel that elevation in your bones the moment you step out of the car. The air is different here, cleaner somehow, with that particular crispness you only get in the mountains.

The Setting

What struck me most about the location is how it manages to feel completely removed from civilization while still being accessible — couples apparently love this balance, and I can see why they’d rate it so highly for romantic getaways. The resort sprawls across spice plantations and coffee estates, and I mean actual working plantations where you’ll catch glimpses of workers harvesting cardamom and pepper. The spa here deserves special mention because they use Ayurvedic treatments with herbs grown right on the property, which feels authentic rather than touristy. There’s also a fitness center and game room, though I’ll admit the scenery outside was more compelling than any indoor entertainment.

The restaurant impressed me with its range — they’ve got everything from continental breakfast options to proper Kerala meals, plus they handle dietary restrictions really well (vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, the works). What I appreciated most was how they incorporated local ingredients; the spices literally come from plants you can see from the dining room windows. The breakfast buffet runs long enough that you don’t feel rushed, which matters when you’re trying to ease into vacation mode. And the coffee — well, when you’re surrounded by coffee plantations, it better be good, and it absolutely is.

The parking is free and right on-site, which sounds mundane but matters when you’re navigating mountain roads. More importantly, the staff seems to genuinely understand that people come here to decompress — they’re attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about local hiking trails and viewpoints, and they don’t oversell activities. Sometimes the best luxury is simply having space to breathe, and that’s exactly what this place offers in abundance.
