UVA Meridian Bay Resort & Spa is one of those places that catches you off guard – not because it’s perfect, but because it’s got this interesting mix of ambition and reality that I actually find pretty refreshing. When you first pull up to the property on Halady Road (and honestly, the GPS gets a bit confused in this area, so give yourself extra time), you’re greeted by this sprawling resort that’s clearly trying to punch above its weight in the luxury category.

The thing about Kundapur – and this is something you won’t really get unless you’ve spent time on this stretch of Karnataka’s coast – is that it’s caught between being this authentic fishing town and wanting to be the next big beach destination. UVA Meridian Bay sits right in that sweet spot, about twenty minutes from the main town center but close enough that you can actually explore the local fish markets and toddy shops if you’re into that sort of thing. The resort itself sprawls across quite a bit of land, and I mean that in a good way – there’s actually space to breathe here, unlike some of the cramped properties you’ll find closer to Udupi or Mangalore.

Now, I’ll be straight with you about the 6.8 rating – it makes sense when you’re there. The bones of this place are solid: the spa is genuinely good (they use local Ayurvedic treatments that aren’t just for show), the rooms are spacious with decent views of the surrounding greenery, and the staff tries really hard, which counts for a lot in my book. But there are those little things that keep it from being truly five-star – maybe the Wi-Fi cuts out more than you’d like, or the restaurant service can be hit-or-miss depending on how busy they are. The pool area is actually quite nice in the evenings, especially when the sea breeze picks up around sunset, though it can get pretty quiet during weekdays since this isn’t exactly on the main tourist circuit.

What I really appreciate about staying here is that you’re getting a legitimate resort experience without the crowds and inflated prices of the more famous coastal spots. The beach access isn’t direct – you’ll need to take a short drive to reach the actual coastline – but that also means you’re not dealing with vendors and noise all day. If you time it right during the off-season (basically any time outside of December-January), you might feel like you have the whole place to yourself, which is either perfect or eerily quiet depending on what you’re after. The breakfast spread is surprisingly good, with proper South Indian options alongside the usual continental stuff, and they actually make a decent filter coffee, which isn’t always a given at resort hotels around here.
