VIENTO BRAVO

You know what caught me off guard about Viento Bravo? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there – I mean, you can literally feel those Pacific winds whipping around the building on Berna Street, and honestly, it’s kind of invigorating rather than annoying. This place sits right in the heart of Pichilemu, and while it’s technically a 3-star spot, the 9.3 rating tells the real story here.

The thing about staying in Pichilemu is that you’re either here for the surf or you’re completely missing the point, and Viento Bravo gets that. The staff actually knows which breaks are firing on any given day – not the touristy stuff you’d find online, but real local intel about where the waves are actually good. I stayed here during shoulder season (which, let’s be honest, is the best time anyway because the summer crowds can be intense), and the vibe was just right. The rooms aren’t fancy, but they’re clean and functional, with that slightly salty air drifting through even when the windows are closed. There’s something about the sound of the wind at night that’s either going to lull you to sleep or keep you up – depends on your tolerance for nature doing its thing, I suppose.

What really sold me on this place was how it feels like an actual part of the town rather than some isolated tourist bubble. You’re walking distance from Punta de Lobos (obviously), but also close enough to the local spots where you can grab empanadas that don’t cost tourist prices. The parking situation is surprisingly decent – not always a given in Chilean beach towns – and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. No unnecessary upselling or fake enthusiasm, just “here’s your key, breakfast is until 10, and yes, we can store your boards.” I mean, that’s exactly what you want, right? The breakfast itself is pretty standard Chilean fare, but the coffee is actually good, and you can sit outside when the wind isn’t too crazy. Fair warning though – if you’re expecting resort-style amenities, you’re looking at the wrong place. This is more about location and honest hospitality than fancy touches, which honestly worked perfectly for what I needed. The Wi-Fi holds up well enough for checking surf reports, and the hot water situation is reliable, which matters more than you’d think after dawn patrol sessions in those chilly Chilean waters.
