Vignette Collection The Windsor Hotel TOYA by IHG Overview
You know what struck me first about The Windsor Hotel TOYA? The drive up here – it’s perched on this hillside overlooking Lake Toya, and honestly, the approach alone is worth it. I mean, you’re winding through these forest roads thinking you might be lost, then suddenly there’s this elegant property emerging from the trees like something out of a movie.
The location is actually pretty brilliant if you understand the area. Most people staying around Lake Toya end up in those big onsen resort hotels right on the waterfront, which are fine but can feel like tourist factories. The Windsor sits higher up, so you get these sweeping views across the entire caldera – especially gorgeous at sunset when the lake turns golden. It’s about a 10-minute drive down to the lake itself, which some people might find annoying, but I actually loved having that buffer from the crowds. Plus, the hotel runs a shuttle if you don’t want to deal with the winding roads after a few drinks.
The building itself has this understated luxury thing going on – it’s not trying to scream “five-star hotel” at you, but everything just feels… right. The lobby has these floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the lake view perfectly, and the staff genuinely seems happy to be there (always a good sign). Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving before 4 PM if you can – that’s when the tour buses from Sapporo tend to roll in and things get a bit chaotic. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, with that clean, minimalist design that somehow feels cozy rather than stark. What really got me was waking up to that view – Lake Toya stretching out below with the mountains beyond, especially beautiful in early morning when the mist is still hanging over the water.
Dining here is where they really shine, actually. The restaurant sources a lot from local farms around the Toya area, and you can taste the difference – especially with the vegetables and dairy. I had this incredible Hokkaido beef that was probably the best meal of my entire trip. Fair warning though, dinner reservations fill up fast during peak season (summer and autumn), so book ahead. The breakfast buffet has a nice mix of Western and Japanese options, and they do this thing with fresh local corn that sounds simple but is absolutely perfect.
One thing to know – it can get quiet here, especially in the shoulder seasons. If you’re looking for nightlife or lots of activity, this might not be your spot. But if you want to unwind, read a book by those massive windows, maybe soak in the onsen while looking out at the lake… well, that’s exactly what this place does best. The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s not quite flawless (the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, and the shuttle schedule is a bit limited), but it nails the fundamentals of what makes a great hotel: location, service, and that feeling that you’re somewhere special.
Guest Reviews
The hotel dispatches a shuttle to JR Toya Station on time to pick up guests. The hotel is located in a scenic spot with excellent service from all staff, comprehensive facilities, and is a five-star hotel worth revisiting.”
What could be improved: food price is high, maybe can consider reduce the food price to increase more consumption. The rest is good.
The settings and views are superb: from one side totally unobstructed views of Lake Toya and the sea on the other side! Our room had a Lake view and we took full advantage of that. The hotel decor, style and appearance are grand, and not by chance...
stunning views, and comfortable rooms
What could be improved: Maybe a little bit expensive, and at dinner they forgot to bring us our drinks, but really everything else was excellent
Location
What could be improved: AC not cooling
The vue and the luxury standard of the facilities. What could be improved: Restaurant organisation attrocious. 8 restaurants. All open from 17.30 to 20.30 and 3 from 12.00 to 14.30. Room service(8 items on menu, no alchohol) 19.30 to 21.30....
Gilligans had very good breakfast. We enjoyed the quality and servings. Much appreciated. Also, staff, paticularly Malala, was friendly and engaging. The onsen was well-provided for. What could be improved: There was no room service, except at...
Although the location for views is really good. As it's so far away from the town and lake, you need a taxi or use the shuttle bus to get to and from the hotel.
Delicious food, beautiful flower arrangements and great facilities especially the onsen. Rooms are clean and comfortable. We were delighted to spot baby fox at breakfast.
What could be improved: Some staff can't speak English.
The view is amazing - we booked an ocean room but got upgraded to a room with a lake view and it was beautiful! The entire place looks pretty grand. Food was average. What could be improved: There elevators are rather confusing from the carpark to...
