Vignette Collection The Windsor Hotel TOYA by IHG Overview

You know what struck me first about The Windsor Hotel TOYA? The drive up here – it’s perched on this hillside overlooking Lake Toya, and honestly, the approach alone is worth it. I mean, you’re winding through these forest roads thinking you might be lost, then suddenly there’s this elegant property emerging from the trees like something out of a movie.

The location is actually pretty brilliant if you understand the area. Most people staying around Lake Toya end up in those big onsen resort hotels right on the waterfront, which are fine but can feel like tourist factories. The Windsor sits higher up, so you get these sweeping views across the entire caldera – especially gorgeous at sunset when the lake turns golden. It’s about a 10-minute drive down to the lake itself, which some people might find annoying, but I actually loved having that buffer from the crowds. Plus, the hotel runs a shuttle if you don’t want to deal with the winding roads after a few drinks.

The building itself has this understated luxury thing going on – it’s not trying to scream “five-star hotel” at you, but everything just feels… right. The lobby has these floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the lake view perfectly, and the staff genuinely seems happy to be there (always a good sign). Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving before 4 PM if you can – that’s when the tour buses from Sapporo tend to roll in and things get a bit chaotic. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, with that clean, minimalist design that somehow feels cozy rather than stark. What really got me was waking up to that view – Lake Toya stretching out below with the mountains beyond, especially beautiful in early morning when the mist is still hanging over the water.

Dining here is where they really shine, actually. The restaurant sources a lot from local farms around the Toya area, and you can taste the difference – especially with the vegetables and dairy. I had this incredible Hokkaido beef that was probably the best meal of my entire trip. Fair warning though, dinner reservations fill up fast during peak season (summer and autumn), so book ahead. The breakfast buffet has a nice mix of Western and Japanese options, and they do this thing with fresh local corn that sounds simple but is absolutely perfect.

One thing to know – it can get quiet here, especially in the shoulder seasons. If you’re looking for nightlife or lots of activity, this might not be your spot. But if you want to unwind, read a book by those massive windows, maybe soak in the onsen while looking out at the lake… well, that’s exactly what this place does best. The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s not quite flawless (the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, and the shuttle schedule is a bit limited), but it nails the fundamentals of what makes a great hotel: location, service, and that feeling that you’re somewhere special.

The hotel dispatches a shuttle to JR Toya Station on time to pick up guests. The hotel is located in a scenic spot with excellent service from all staff, comprehensive facilities, and is a five-star hotel worth revisiting.”

What could be improved: food price is high, maybe can consider reduce the food price to increase more consumption. The rest is good.

The settings and views are superb: from one side totally unobstructed views of Lake Toya and the sea on the other side! Our room had a Lake view and we took full advantage of that.
The hotel decor, style and appearance are grand, and not by chance this hotel has been a repeated choice for several high profile events, such as G8 summits and so on.
The choice of restaurants and food is varied and the quality of the food is excellent (we tried only Japanese food).
The onsen/spa (one of them, which alternates daily between male and female) has an outdoor warm pool, with views of Lake Toya.
Aside the onsen, there are very good facilities including swimming pools, souvenir shops, golf, skiing (in winter), etc.

What could be improved: The gym was quite small and not sufficiently equipped - e.g. no weights nor dumbbells.
Some of the decoration items, upon closer scrutiny, were made of plastic, which did not quite fit the grandness of the place.
Because of the location and the climate in the area, visibility can be very low. This was the case during two of the three days of our stay and we were fortunate that we had at least one day of clear and gorgeous weather. If you care about the views, take this into account when booking your stay.
While the food in the hotel restaurants is excellent, it is also quite pricey - still an acceptable quality/price but be prepared to shell around ¥15,000 - 20,000 per person at least.

Gilligans had very good breakfast. We enjoyed the quality and servings. Much appreciated. Also, staff, paticularly Malala, was friendly and engaging. The onsen was well-provided for.

What could be improved: There was no room service, except at 19:30. We arrived early afternoon and had no food to order, tho’ famished. Bummer. Japanese breakfast was limited, no other options given (e.g. if coffee was preferred over tea). Tha quality of food was very good, however. Wifi was slow in the room and lobby and unavailable at the gym.

Although the location for views is really good. As it's so far away from the town and lake, you need a taxi or use the shuttle bus to get to and from the hotel.

What could be improved: There elevators are rather confusing from the carpark to the hotel reception. The location might not be that convenient if you are not coming by car.
