Village Motel

Corner of Te Aute Road & Porter Drive, 4130 Havelock North, New Zealand

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what surprised me most about Village Motel? The name totally undersells it. I mean, when you hear “motel,” you’re probably picturing something basic off a highway, but this place sits right in the heart of Havelock North and honestly feels more like a boutique accommodation that just happens to have convenient parking outside your door.

The location is actually perfect if you know the area at all – you’re literally at the corner where Te Aute Road meets Porter Drive, which means you can walk to the village center in about three minutes (I timed it because I’m weird like that). There’s this lovely buzz during the day with people heading to the weekend farmers market or grabbing coffee at one of those cute cafes along Napier Road, but it gets surprisingly quiet at night. The rooms face away from the main road anyway, so traffic noise isn’t really an issue. What I loved most was how the owners have managed to keep that relaxed, small-town Hawke’s Bay vibe while actually delivering on the details that matter – the beds are genuinely comfortable (not just “motel comfortable”), the bathrooms are spacious with proper water pressure, and there’s this nice courtyard area where you can sit with a wine from one of the nearby vineyards. Speaking of which, you’re basically surrounded by some of New Zealand’s best wineries here, and the staff actually know which ones are worth visiting versus the tourist traps.

The whole setup feels like someone put real thought into what travelers actually need. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no lengthy speeches about amenities I’ll never use, just friendly chat about local restaurant recommendations (their tip about the Thai place down Porter Drive was spot on, by the way). I stayed during autumn when Havelock North gets these gorgeous golden afternoons, and you could smell wood smoke drifting from nearby chimneys in the evening. The 4.5-star rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be fancy for fancy’s sake, but everything just works properly. Clean, comfortable, well-maintained, with those little touches like decent coffee in the room and actually good WiFi. Plus, if you’re planning to explore the region, you’re perfectly positioned – Te Mata Peak is a short drive up the hill for sunrise (trust me on this one), Napier’s Art Deco stuff is fifteen minutes away, and you can hit three different wineries before lunch without feeling rushed. I’d honestly stay here again, which says something because I’m usually pretty picky about accommodations.

Cleanliness, friendly staff, main room was large, bed was comfortable, loved the bath. Also dog friendly. Short walk to shops and the nearest supermarket.

What could be improved: Shower above bath. Which is not a biggie admittedly. Lack of a separate toilet despite apartment sleeps 4.

The location was perfect, an easy walk to cafes and shops, and easy parking. The room was nice and clean. We had everything we needed - fridge, microwave, and a small stove top. The bed was extremely comfortable.

Location, service, comfortable beds.

What could be improved: I wish it had a pool but that’s ok. From felt dark unless we opened the front window curtain which we were worried it would compromise privacy but there won’t be anything you could do about that.

Very close to the centre of Havelock North so you could easily walk to shops etc. A large unit with a huge bed. Bathroom nice and large too. Although the motel was full there was no noise from the other units.

What could be improved: A large unit, although the main bed was in the living area and the separate bedroom was quite small with 2 singles. The shower was in a bath which was a little high to safely step in and out with confidence.
