The park sits at this sweet spot where you can easily get onto the water but you’re not completely isolated from town if you need supplies or a proper coffee.

What really sold me on the place though was how it sits in Whanganui itself. You’re about a 10-minute walk into the main part of town, maybe 15 if you’re dawdling, and honestly the walk along the river is half the fun. The Sarjeant Gallery’s worth a look if you’re into that sort of thing, and there are some surprisingly good cafés tucked around the place – though don’t expect Auckland-level coffee culture, obviously. The park gets busy during school holidays (fair warning if you’re seeking total peace), but even then it doesn’t feel cramped. I reckon they’ve got the site layout sorted pretty well. The river frontage means there’s always this sense of space, even when the powered sites are full of families with their massive campervans. Actually, that’s another thing – if you’re in a tent, try to snag one of the spots closer to the water. The difference in morning ambiance is worth requesting specifically.

Look, it’s not going to win any luxury accommodation awards, but that 8.9 rating makes complete sense to me. It delivers exactly what it promises – a clean, well-run base for exploring this part of the North Island, with the river as your backyard and proper Whanganui hospitality. If you’re road-tripping through or using it as a launching pad for river adventures, you’ll leave pretty satisfied. Just pack some insect repellent for summer evenings – the sandflies didn’t get the memo about being polite to tourists.
