HOTEL OVERVIEW

Nestled in the picturesque hot spring town of Hakone, the four-star Yamagaso offers an authentic Japanese ryokan experience with modern comforts. Located at Yumoto 592 in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, this distinguished accommodation sits in one of Japan’s most celebrated onsen (hot spring) regions, just a short journey from Tokyo. With an impressive guest rating of 8.6, Yamagaso has established itself as a highly regarded retreat for both international travelers and Japanese visitors seeking rejuvenation in the healing waters of Hakone. The property’s strategic location in Yumoto area places guests at the gateway to Hakone’s natural wonders, including Lake Ashi, Mount Fuji views, and the renowned Hakone Open-Air Museum, while offering easy access via the Hakone-Yumoto Station for those traveling from major cities. The traditional yet refined ambiance of Yamagaso perfectly captures the essence of Japanese hospitality, or “omotenashi,” which has earned the hotel its stellar reputation among guests. The ryokan’s thoughtful design incorporates elements of traditional Japanese architecture, with tatami mat rooms, sliding paper doors, and meticulously maintained gardens that change their appearance with the seasons—from cherry blossoms in spring to fiery maple leaves in autumn. The hotel’s thermal baths, fed by Hakone’s mineral-rich hot springs, provide the centerpiece experience, offering indoor and outdoor bathing options where guests can practice the time-honored Japanese tradition of communal bathing while soaking away stress and fatigue. The dining experience at Yamagaso further elevates the stay, with elaborate kaiseki multi-course meals showcasing seasonal ingredients and local specialties, often served in private dining rooms or directly in guest suites. Each dish represents the careful attention to detail and artistic presentation that characterizes Japanese cuisine at its finest. Beyond the confines of this exceptional property, Yamagaso serves as an ideal base for exploring the cultural and natural treasures of Hakone. The hotel’s knowledgeable staff, committed to maintaining the high standards reflected in its 8.6 rating, provide personalized recommendations for experiencing the area’s diverse attractions—from the ancient cedar-lined paths of the Old Tokaido Road to the volcanic activity of Owakudani, where visitors witness steam vents and sample the famous black eggs cooked in the hot springs. After days spent exploring or simply unwinding in the therapeutic waters, guests return to the tranquil sanctuary of Yamagaso, where comfortable futon bedding laid out on tatami floors promises restorative sleep. The blend of traditional aesthetics with thoughtful modern amenities creates an environment where visitors can truly disconnect from everyday stresses while immersing themselves in Japanese culture. Whether seeking a romantic getaway, a cultural deep-dive, or a wellness retreat, Yamagaso delivers an authentic, high-quality experience that has rightly earned it recognition as one of Hakone’s premier four-star accommodations.

Loved the whole setup, the service and the private onset, it’s a magical experience for us.

What could be improved: I booked a night w breakfast included thinking it will be traditional Japanese breakfast as per the pictures and review photos. However, during our stay the breakfast served was not Japanese style and I was a little disappointed.

The cabin is quite large and surrounded by ponds and trees. The futon was comfy and the AC was effective driving the cold away. I’m very sad leaving the kotatsu behind.

The kaiseki meals are delicious and quite a bit as well I’m always full and haven’t finished the meals.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had two sets of friends, one that stayed here and another at Senki. We both LOVED the experience. We came during a downpour and the staff were so kind and carried our luggage to our rooms. They even dried the outside of them off. The futons were very comfortable and we all enjoyed our breakfasts. The hot spring options were great! We didn't get to experience the upstairs outdoor one with the view because of the heavy rain though, which was to no fault of their own. They also helped us ship our luggage and call a taxi when we were having trouble with the GO app due to it being a holiday. When we left in the taxi, they helped load our suitcases and they gave us a warm goodbye. Both sets of friends agreed that we highly recommend both here at Yamagaso and Senki.

The place was great, but what we most enjoyed were the meals, we asked for breakfast and dinner and they were exquisite, our best stay in Japan by far.

My husband and I had such a great time in our beautiful room, Chouji, which was more like a small house. The service was so sweet and attentive and the meals served were extensive and so good. What could be improved: One thing is that we didn't get any food included with the booking and wished we did as we were hungry when we got there! It would be good if we were warned a shorter stay meant no meals ;u;

The dinner was traditional Japanese staff which we didn’t know but enjoyed almost all of them

Very gentle staff

What could be improved: I texted the property many times nobody answered we should know about check in to the next building before our arrival.

Extremely high priced for what is offered. I think half it should be priced about 30% lower so that it’s attractive. Now, while we enjoyed our stay, I believe it was a waste of money.
