HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Playa Largo – you know how the Overseas Highway can be lined with everything from sketchy motels to overpriced tourist traps. But this place actually surprised me in the best way. It sits right on Florida Bay (not the ocean side, which some people don’t realize), and there’s something really peaceful about watching the sunset over those mangrove-dotted waters. The property feels more like a sophisticated beach house than your typical Keys resort, if that makes sense.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to capture that laid-back Keys vibe without feeling sloppy about it. The lobby opens right up to the water, and you can literally smell the salt air the moment you walk in – not that artificial ocean breeze from some air freshener, but the real deal mixed with a hint of mangrove. The rooms are genuinely nice, with these floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel like you’re floating over the bay. I mean, the bathrooms alone are bigger than some hotel rooms I’ve stayed in, and they actually thought about storage space (shocking, I know). The only thing that bugged me a little was the Wi-Fi could be spotty near the water – though honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise.
The restaurant scene here is where they really shine, and I’m usually pretty skeptical about hotel dining. Their waterfront spot serves up this Caribbean-influenced menu that doesn’t feel forced or touristy – the mahi actually tastes like it was caught that morning, probably because it was. You’ll want to grab a table on the deck if you can, especially around 6 PM when the light starts getting golden. The spa is tucked away in this quiet corner where you can barely hear the highway traffic, which is no small feat on Mile Marker 97. And here’s something most people miss – if you’re into fishing or just want to get out on the water, they’ve got a really solid marina setup with captains who actually know these flats like the back of their hand, not just guys reading GPS coordinates. The whole place strikes this balance between being upscale enough to feel special but relaxed enough that you won’t feel out of place in flip-flops. It’s pricier than your average Keys stay, sure, but when you’re dealing with that 8.6 rating and actual five-star treatment, it makes sense why people keep coming back.
