HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of resort properties in the Phoenix area, and honestly? This JW Marriott out in Desert Ridge is the one I keep coming back to. First thing you notice pulling up – and parking is actually easy here, which isn’t always a given at these bigger resorts – is how they’ve managed to make this massive property feel like it belongs in the desert instead of fighting against it. The architecture works with all those saguaros and desert landscaping rather than trying to pretend it’s Vegas or something.
What really gets me about this place is the space. I mean, we’re talking about a sprawling resort that sits on what feels like its own little corner of the Sonoran Desert, and they’ve used every bit of it well. The pool area alone – there are actually multiple pools, including this lazy river that my kids became completely obsessed with – spreads out so you never feel crowded even when the place is packed during spring training season. And you know what? The staff actually seems to know what they’re doing. Check-in was smooth, they knew about the local hiking trails when I asked (South Mountain is about 20 minutes south if you want something more challenging than the resort’s own walking paths), and housekeeping managed to work around our weird schedule without any drama.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a five-star Marriott property – well-appointed, clean, those big fluffy bathrobes that make you want to extend your stay an extra day. But here’s the thing that really sold me on this place: step out onto your balcony in the early morning, and you get this incredible view of the McDowell Mountains with the desert stretching out below. It’s quiet enough that you can actually hear the coyotes at dawn, which sounds intimidating but is honestly pretty magical. The spa is legitimately good too – I’m usually skeptical of hotel spas, but they do this desert stone massage that actually lived up to the hype. Food situation is solid across the board; the restaurants aren’t trying too hard to be trendy, just focusing on doing things well. And if you want to venture out, you’re about fifteen minutes from Scottsdale’s main strip, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with all that noise and traffic. During the cooler months (October through April, really), this place hits that sweet spot where you can enjoy all the outdoor amenities without melting into the pavement.
