HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, when I first pulled up to Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, Ponto Road isn’t exactly the most glamorous address, right? But then you walk through those doors and suddenly you’re hit with this massive ocean view that just makes you forget you’re technically in a strip of beach hotels. The lobby’s got this California coastal vibe without going overboard on the nautical theme (thank god, because anchor decorations are so overdone).
What really got me was how they’ve positioned everything here. You’re literally across from Ponto State Beach, which honestly most people skip for the more famous spots, but that’s actually perfect because it means you get this gorgeous stretch of sand without the Disneyland-level crowds. The spa – and I’m usually skeptical about hotel spas – actually delivers. They’ve got this eucalyptus steam room that smells incredible, and the treatment rooms face the ocean so you can hear the waves during your massage. The pool area’s pretty solid too, though it gets packed during summer weekends when all the San Diego families drive up. Pro tip: hit the hot tub around sunset when most people are getting ready for dinner.
The rooms are what you’d expect from Hilton – clean, comfortable, nothing revolutionary but definitely not disappointing either. Some of the oceanview rooms have these little balconies where you can actually hear the surf at night, which is worth the upgrade if you’re into that sort of thing. Parking’s included, which is honestly a relief because finding street parking in this area during peak season is basically impossible. The restaurant downstairs (Chandler’s) is decent for breakfast – their Benedict’s pretty good and the coffee’s strong – though I’d probably venture out for dinner since Carlsbad Village has some really solid spots just a few minutes south on Coast Highway. Check-in was smooth, staff seemed genuinely friendly rather than just professionally polite, and they didn’t try to upsell me on every little thing, which I always appreciate. It’s not the fanciest place you’ll ever stay, but for a solid beachfront experience without the La Jolla price tag, Cape Rey definitely hits the mark.
