You know what struck me first about Kaanapali Alii? It’s actually not right on the beach like some of the other resorts along this stretch — it sits back a bit on Nohea Drive, which honestly turned out to be perfect. You get this elevated view over the ocean without all the foot traffic from beach walkers wandering past your lanai every five minutes.

The whole place feels more like a collection of luxury condos than a typical hotel, and I mean that in the best way possible. These aren’t cramped hotel rooms — we’re talking full kitchens, separate bedrooms, and lanais big enough to actually eat dinner on while watching the sunset paint Lanai island purple in the distance. The units are spacious enough that you forget you’re sharing walls with other people, though you’ll occasionally hear kids splashing in one of the pools below (there are two, and the upper one tends to be quieter if that matters to you). What really sold me was how the property manages to feel upscale without being stuffy. Sure, the lobby has that polished resort look, but the staff actually remembers your name after a day or two, and they’ll give you real recommendations — not just the tourist trap stuff. When I asked about snorkeling spots, the front desk guy told me to skip the crowded area right in front of Whalers Village and walk about ten minutes north to a little cove that locals use. He was absolutely right.

The location is sort of perfect if you want to be close to everything without being in the thick of it. Whalers Village is literally a three-minute walk when you want restaurants or shops, but you’re far enough away that you don’t hear the live music from Leilani’s until late at night. And here’s something nobody mentions — the parking situation is actually decent, which is rare for this part of Maui. You get a spot with your unit, and there’s usually guest parking available too. I’ve stayed at places in Kaanapali where finding parking felt like a competitive sport, so this was refreshing. The trade-off is that you’re not walking straight onto the sand from your room, but honestly? The two-minute stroll to Kaanapali Beach is nothing, and you pass through some gorgeous landscaping that smells like plumeria and ginger. During whale season (winter months), you can actually spot humpbacks from the property — I spent way too many mornings with my coffee just scanning the water between Maui and Lanai looking for spouts.
