Look, I’ll be straight with you about Green Fields Kumarakom – it’s one of those places that looks absolutely stunning in photos, and honestly, the reality lives up to most of the hype. When you’re driving down that Kottayam-Kumarakom road and you spot the entrance in Kaippuzhamuttu, you know you’re in for something special. The property sits right where you want to be for exploring the backwaters, but far enough from the main tourist chaos that you can actually hear the water lapping instead of boat engines all day long.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Kerala feel without making you rough it – I mean, it’s a 5-star place, so your expectations are set pretty high walking in. The traditional architecture actually works here (unlike some resorts that feel like they’re trying too hard), and the staff genuinely seems to know the area well enough to point you toward the good local spots, not just the obvious tourist traps. You know what surprised me most? The food. They do this incredible fish curry that uses coconut milk in a way that… well, let’s just say I tried to recreate it at home and failed miserably. The restaurant overlooks the water, which is nice, though I’d recommend grabbing dinner early – around sunset the mosquitoes can get a bit enthusiastic.

Now, here’s the thing about the 7.0 rating – it’s not because this place is mediocre, it’s because it’s still finding its rhythm in some areas. The rooms are gorgeous (seriously, those wooden accents and the way they’ve done the bathrooms), but the Wi-Fi can be spotty, especially during monsoon season when half of Kerala’s internet seems to take a break. The housekeeping is thorough, though they tend to show up pretty early if you don’t put the do-not-disturb sign out. What I really appreciated was the genuine effort to connect you with the backwater experience – they’ll arrange those traditional houseboat trips, but they also know the smaller canoe routes where you can spot kingfishers and maybe even some otters if you’re lucky. The pool area gets busy around midday when families with kids are around, but early morning or late afternoon it’s perfect for just floating and watching the palm trees sway. If you’re coming during peak season (December through February), book way ahead – this place fills up with people who’ve discovered it’s possible to have luxury without feeling completely disconnected from why you came to Kerala in the first place.
