HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know, I’ve stayed at plenty of onsen hotels across Japan, but Ryugujo Spa Hotel Mikazuki Fujimitei in Kisarazu really caught me off guard – in the best way possible. First off, the name’s a mouthful (honestly, just call it Mikazuki like the locals do), but once you’re pulling up to this sprawling complex right on Kisarazu’s waterfront, you’ll forget all about trying to pronounce it correctly. The thing that hits you immediately is the view – I mean, you’re literally staring across Tokyo Bay, and on clear days you can actually make out the Tokyo skyline shimmering in the distance. It’s one of those spots where you realize how close you are to the capital but feel worlds away from all that urban chaos.

The hotel itself is this interesting mix of traditional ryokan vibes with modern resort amenities, and somehow it actually works. The onsen facilities are genuinely impressive – multiple indoor and outdoor baths with different mineral compositions, plus they’ve got this massive pool complex that’s perfect if you’re traveling with kids who might not be totally sold on the whole “sitting quietly in hot springs” concept. What I really appreciated was how they handle the crowds; yes, it gets busy (especially on weekends and holidays), but the staff has this down to a science. Check-in was surprisingly smooth even during Golden Week madness, and they’ve got enough bath facilities that you’re never fighting for space. The rooms vary quite a bit – some are traditional tatami setups, others more Western-style – but even the standard ones have decent bay views if you’re on the right side of the building.

Here’s what really sets this place apart though: the location gives you options. You’re not stuck in some remote mountain village (beautiful as those can be), but you’re also not dealing with city noise and pollution. Kisarazu itself is pretty quiet – there’s decent parking, the train connections to Tokyo are actually reasonable if you want to day-trip, and you’ve got the Aqua-Line bridge right there, which is honestly worth the drive just for the experience. The hotel restaurant situation is solid too; nothing groundbreaking, but they do a proper kaiseki dinner that changes seasonally, and breakfast has enough variety to keep everyone happy. I’ll be honest, the building shows its age in some spots, and the decor can feel a bit dated, but the bones are good and the staff clearly takes pride in the place. For families or couples wanting that onsen experience without being completely cut off from civilization, it’s actually a pretty sweet spot. The 8.4 rating feels about right – not perfect, but definitely delivers on what it promises.

The buffet breakfast and dinner were perfect for families. Our 2 year old daughter had plenty of options as did we. Our bedroom was perfect for family as well. We had 2 double beds in the bedroom, a tatami room with table and 4 chairs (futons in the cupboard), a nice bathroom with a bathtub that opened up to the balcony, and a balcony big enough to hang out when our daughter went to sleep. There were also options for a mumu style outfit or a yukata for the hotel stay. Our daughter absolutely loved it and it made travelling so much nicer to not come with with laundry. There were so many things we could do which was really nice as the weather was very typhoon like for a day anda half of our stay. We paid extra for a kids soft play but it was worth it as everything was on the same premises :).

What could be improved: The facilities available were amazing. They were also very old and not kept up well sadly. They had several pools, all of which included various rusted items around them, but kids never notice and every did have a great time. My serious complaint comes with the "animal kingdom NOAH" out in the back. We did not realise it was so inhumane when we entered. We thought there were going to be a few small animals to be petted, nut there was a huge number of exotic and large animals all in cages that barely fit the animals and there was not a single animals that could move. There were dogs, cats, 2 kangaroos, sloths, an alligator, beavers, otters, a binturong, snakes, chicks, hamsters, rabbits, birds, owls, etc. The animals were either completely drugged up or deeply depressed but either way most were so lethargic it was painful to watch. IT WAS HORRIFIC and so terribly sad.

料理の種類が豊富でとても満足でした
料理のお皿も随時下げてくれて
子供がいたのでとても助かりました

天候には恵まれなかったので
スパや大浴場などで過ごせてよかったです

What could be improved: 子供のご飯(むき枝豆やソーセージ、ナゲット、ポテトが皮無しのもの)がもう少しあったらよかったな、と思いました。

あとは、事前に子供がいることを伝えていたので
おむつBOXの用意が事前にされていたらもっとよかったなと思いました。
