The Old Confectionery

26 Tees Street, 9400 Oamaru, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what’s funny about Oamaru? Most people just breeze through on their way to the penguins, but if you actually stop and wander around the Victorian precinct, you’ll stumble across The Old Confectionery on Tees Street – and honestly, it’s one of those finds that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special. The building itself tells you everything you need to know before you even check in. I mean, they actually converted a 19th-century confectionery shop, and you can still see the original pressed tin ceilings and these gorgeous limestone walls that give the whole place this warm, honey-colored glow in the afternoon light.
The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully restored rather than just renovated – there’s a difference, you know? They’ve kept all the character stuff (the high ceilings, the original hardwood floors that creak just enough to remind you where you are) but added proper modern bathrooms and really comfortable beds. The heating actually works, which is no small thing in Oamaru during winter – I’ve stayed in plenty of “historic charm” places where you’re basically camping indoors. What really got me was the attention to small details… like how they’ve positioned the rooms so you’re not staring directly into the building across the street, and the blackout curtains actually block out the streetlights from Thames Street.
The location is pretty much perfect if you want to explore Oamaru properly. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Steam Punk HQ (which sounds ridiculous but is actually quite entertaining) and maybe five minutes from the harbor where all the penguin tours start. Parking is right there on the street – no wrestling with tiny parking garages or walking six blocks with your luggage. The couple who run the place clearly know their stuff about the area too. They’ll point you toward Whitestone Cheese if you want to do the factory tour, or tell you the best time to hit the farmers market on Saturdays without fighting crowds. I actually ended up having one of my best meals in town at a little place they recommended that I never would have found otherwise. With a 9.6 rating, you’d expect it to be good, but this place delivers on the promise – it’s got that rare combination of genuine historic character and modern comfort that most hotels either can’t afford or don’t bother to get right.

Breathtaking and stunning! Our family entered and we were awestruck immediately — historic architecture on the outside coupled with a luxury interior. The amenities were wonderful as well, private laundry, heated spaces (including bathroom floors), access to streaming services if needed). Lastly, the location was ideal — near the Oamaru Blue...

Beautiful building with opulent interio decor. Absolutely everything was high end choice from the kettle to the lamps, the floorings all maintaining the character of the building.

The Old Confectionery was simply perfect to explore Oamaru. Beautifully decorated and styled it provided a great base to walk into the Victorian area and harbour.
By far the best place we have stayed in our NZ trip.
