Abad Turtle Beach

Honestly, when I first pulled up to Abad Turtle Beach in Mararikulam, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – you know how sometimes these beachfront places can either be absolute gems or total tourist traps? But this one… well, it actually lives up to that 5-star rating, and I say that as someone who’s gotten pretty cynical about hotel classifications over the years.

The thing about Mararikulam is that it’s still got this authentic Kerala vibe that places like Kovalam have sort of lost to the crowds. You’re right on this gorgeous stretch of beach where you can actually hear the waves at night (which sounds obvious, but trust me, half the “beachfront” hotels I’ve stayed at, you hear traffic instead). The property sits in Varankavala, and what I love is that you can take these little walks through the village lanes where kids are playing cricket and women are hanging saris to dry – it feels real, not like some sanitized resort bubble. The backwaters are literally a short ride away too, so if you’re planning to do the houseboat thing, you don’t have to trek all the way to Alleppey.

What really got me though was how they’ve managed to keep things luxurious without being stuffy. The rooms have this beautiful traditional Kerala architecture – those wooden beams and red tile roofs – but the AC actually works (miracle!), and the bathrooms are properly modern. I mean, you get the Instagram-worthy aesthetics without sacrificing comfort, which is honestly rare. The staff seems genuinely happy to be there, not just going through the motions, and they know the area well enough to give you actual useful recommendations rather than just pointing you toward the obvious tourist spots. The restaurant serves proper Kerala food alongside the usual continental stuff, and their fish curry is legitimately good – like, local-family-recipe good, not hotel-kitchen approximation.

I’ll be honest, it’s not cheap, but for what you get in this part of Kerala, it’s actually reasonable. The beach here isn’t as crowded as the more famous spots, so you can have these moments where it’s just you, the coconut palms, and the Arabian Sea doing its thing. During monsoon season (June to September), obviously it’s a different story, but if you hit it between October and March, you’re golden. The only minor thing that bugged me was that WiFi can be spotty in some rooms – not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if you’re trying to work remotely. Overall though, if you want that classic Kerala beach experience without feeling like you’re roughing it, Abad Turtle Beach hits that sweet spot perfectly.
