Alyeska Resort Overview

You know what hits you first at Alyeska Resort? The sheer scale of everything around you. I mean, you’re literally sitting at the base of Mount Alyeska with these massive peaks just towering overhead – it’s honestly a bit overwhelming in the best possible way. The resort itself feels surprisingly substantial for being tucked away in tiny Girdwood (and I do mean tiny, the whole town is basically one main drag). But here’s the thing about this place: it manages to feel both rustic and polished at the same time, which isn’t easy to pull off in Alaska.

The location is actually pretty brilliant when you think about it. You’re about 40 minutes south of Anchorage, so you get that wilderness feeling without being completely cut off from civilization. During ski season – which, let’s be honest, is when most people think about coming here – the resort transforms into this buzzing hub where you’ll hear everything from Texas drawls to German accents in the lobby. But I’ve stayed here in summer too, and that’s when you really appreciate what they’ve got going on. The aerial tramway runs year-round (weather permitting, because this is Alaska after all), and taking it up to the Seven Glaciers Restaurant is worth it even if you’re not skiing. The view from up there is absolutely ridiculous – you can see Turnagain Arm stretching out below and glaciers that look close enough to touch.

What I really like about staying here is that it doesn’t feel like you’re trapped in some resort bubble. Girdwood has this laid-back vibe where locals actually hang out at the same spots tourists do, and the Alyeska fits right into that. The rooms are solid – not fancy boutique hotel stuff, but comfortable and warm, which matters more than you might think when it’s negative twenty outside. The staff generally knows their stuff too, especially about local conditions and what’s actually worth doing versus what’s just tourist trap nonsense. Parking is free (thank god, because paid parking in a town this small would be insulting), and honestly the whole check-in process is refreshingly straightforward. Sure, it’s not perfect – the WiFi can be spotty, and some of the common areas feel a bit dated – but those feel like minor quibbles when you wake up to views like this. Whether you’re here to ski, hike, or just experience Alaska without roughing it completely, Alyeska gives you a legitimate base camp that actually enhances the experience rather than distracting from it.

Premium healing resorts offer comprehensive wellness programs featuring spa therapies, meditation retreats, and holistic treatments designed to promote deep relaxation and personal renewal.

We come from Anchorage for a few days a year to mellow out and relax. The pool is always the highlight of our trip.

There are thoughtful touches to this property nestled in nature. The nordic spa was terrific. The rooms were very sound proofed.

We loved the Nordic Spa here at the resort. We did the 60 minute massage before the spa and was well worth every penny!

The resort didn't offer late checkout, but they were accommodating in storing the bags. Also the pool attendants were quite nice. The shops were also quite nice, well-curated, and reasonably priced given the location. Common spaces were inviting and well-maintained, with lots of comfortable spots to sit and enjoy the fire in a proper lodge...
