I mean, we’re talking about a proper resort spread across multiple buildings with its own spa complex, leisure facilities, and restaurants dotted around manicured grounds that feel worlds away from the busy ferry terminal just down the hill in Brodick.

The thing about staying at Auchrannie is that you quickly realize why it pulls a 9.0 rating – it’s the kind of place that actually gets the balance right between feeling upscale without being stuffy. The rooms (well, the ones I’ve stayed in anyway) have that solid Scottish hospitality feel with proper attention to detail, though honestly, you’ll probably spend more time exploring than lounging in your room. The leisure club is where things get interesting – there’s this gorgeous pool area that’s surprisingly peaceful even when it’s busy, and the spa treatments… let’s just say after a day hiking up Goatfell, that’s exactly what you need. What I really appreciate is how they’ve managed to create different atmospheres depending on what you’re after. Want a quiet dinner? The Eighteen69 restaurant does excellent locally-sourced food (the Arran beef is something else). Need something more casual after the kids have been running around? The Cruize Bar works perfectly, and you can actually have a conversation without shouting.

Here’s what the travel websites don’t always mention – Auchrannie sits in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk into Brodick village (maybe 10 minutes down the road), but far enough up the hill that you get those proper views across to the Ayrshire coast. The parking’s never been an issue when I’ve visited, which honestly can’t be said for everywhere on Arran, especially during the summer months when the ferry brings waves of day-trippers. And speaking of timing – if you can swing a visit in late spring or early autumn, you’ll get the best of both worlds: decent weather and fewer crowds fighting for tables at dinner. The staff genuinely seem to know the island well too, which makes a difference when you’re asking about hiking routes or where to spot the red deer. It’s that kind of local knowledge that turns a good stay into one of those trips you end up recommending to everyone back home.
