Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of places in New Zealand, but Circular Bay on Awaawaroa Road actually surprised me. You know that feeling when you pull up somewhere and think “okay, this might be special”? That’s exactly what happened here. The property sits in this gorgeous spot in Awaroa – and honestly, if you’ve never been to this part of the Abel Tasman, you’re missing out. It’s not one of those places that’s crawling with tour buses, which I mean, that’s kind of the whole point.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep things sophisticated without being stuffy. The rooms have this clean, understated vibe that actually lets you focus on why you’re here – those views of the bay are honestly ridiculous. I spent way too much time just sitting on the balcony with my coffee, watching the water change colors as the day went on. The staff clearly knows the area inside and out too, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to figure out the best walking tracks or where to grab a decent meal nearby. They pointed me toward some spots I never would’ve found on my own, including this little beach access that’s perfect if you want to avoid the crowds at the main Awaroa Beach entrance.

The whole place has this relaxed energy that works really well – it’s polished enough that you feel like you’re treating yourself, but not so formal that you can’t just wander around in your hiking gear. Parking’s easy (always a relief when you’re road tripping), and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. I will say the location means you’re a bit removed from restaurants and shops, but honestly? That’s exactly what you want here. You’re staying for the nature, the quiet, and those incredible golden hour moments when the light hits the water just right. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s one of those places that delivers on what it promises without trying to be something it’s not.
