When you finally pull up to the hotel, there’s this moment where you realize they’ve managed to create something that feels both grand and completely unpretentious at the same time.

The whole place revolves around the lakes (obviously), and I’ve got to say, they’re not just decorative – people actually use them. You’ll see guests out there fishing at dawn, which gives the place this authentic country hotel vibe rather than the sterile feel you get at some chain properties. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star – comfortable beds, decent-sized bathrooms, though don’t expect cutting-edge design. It’s more classic British hotel style, which honestly works well with the setting. The staff seem to genuinely know the area too, which is refreshing. Ask them about local walks and you’ll get proper directions, not just a glossy brochure.

Here’s the thing about Hellidon Lakes – it’s got that 7.2 rating for good reasons, but also some understandable limitations. The location is absolutely its strength if you want to properly disconnect (mobile signal can be patchy, fair warning), and it’s brilliant for exploring the Cotswolds without paying Cotswolds prices. The restaurant does solid British fare, nothing revolutionary but they source locally and you can taste the difference. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets in the evenings – you can actually hear the water lapping and maybe some ducks having a conversation. The leisure facilities are well-maintained, and that pool overlooks the lakes which is a nice touch. Parking’s easy and free, check-in was smooth, and they seem to run a tight ship without being stuffy about it. It’s the sort of place where you might bump into locals having Sunday lunch, which always feels like a good sign. If you’re looking for trendy cocktails and city energy, you’ll be disappointed, but if you want to wake up to proper countryside views and spend your days exploring villages with names like Upper Heyford and Farthingstone, it’s actually perfect for that.
