I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel Gavina Costa Mar on Avenida Arturo Prat, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The address puts you right in the thick of Iquique’s main drag, which can be a blessing or a curse depending on what you’re after. But you know what? This place actually gets the balance right.

The thing about staying on Prat Avenue is that you’re literally steps from everything that matters in Iquique. I mean, you can walk to the duty-free zone (ZOFRI) in about ten minutes if you’re into that shopping scene, and the historic downtown with all those beautiful wooden buildings from the nitrate boom days is right there. What surprised me though was how quiet the rooms stay despite being on such a busy street – they’ve clearly invested in proper windows, which honestly makes all the difference when those micro buses start their morning routes around 6 AM.

The hotel itself feels genuinely upscale without being stuffy about it. Check-in was smooth (they actually remembered I was coming from the airport and had cold towels ready, which was clutch after that flight), and the lobby has this sort of modern coastal vibe that works well with Iquique’s desert-meets-ocean personality. The rooms are spacious – like, actually spacious, not “spacious for Chile” spacious – and most have decent ocean views if you crane your neck a bit. I stayed on the seventh floor and could see the Pacific stretching out toward the horizon, with those dramatic cliffs that make Iquique’s coastline so striking. The air conditioning works properly too, which you’ll appreciate when that desert heat kicks in during the afternoon.

What really sold me on this place was the attention to details that matter when you’re traveling. The WiFi actually works throughout the building (tried it in the elevator, don’t judge), there’s proper water pressure in the shower, and the breakfast spread has both international options and local stuff like sopaipillas and decent coffee. The pool area gets good sun most of the day, though it can get crowded with families on weekends. Parking was included, which saved me the headache of finding street parking in that area – trust me, it’s worth it.

Location-wise, you’re about a fifteen-minute walk to Cavancha Beach if you want the main tourist beach experience, or you can head south toward Playa Brava for something a bit more dramatic. The hotel staff seemed to know their way around town too – they pointed me toward some excellent ceviche at a place I never would have found on my own, just a few blocks inland from the main tourist strip.

Look, it’s not perfect – the elevator can be slow during busy periods, and some of the hallway carpeting looks like it’s seen better days. But for a five-star place in Iquique, it delivers on the things that actually matter: comfort, location, and service that feels genuine rather than scripted. That 8.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s a solid choice that’ll make your time in this unique corner of northern Chile considerably more comfortable.
