juSTa Birding Resort & Spa – Best Dhauladhar View Resort

So I found this place completely by accident while looking for somewhere to stay near the paragliding launch point in Bir Billing – well, sort of near it anyway. juSTa Birding Resort is tucked away in this tiny village called Chohla, about 20 minutes up a winding mountain road from Dharamshala proper. Honestly, the drive up made me wonder if my GPS was having a breakdown, but then you round this corner and suddenly there’s the Dhauladhar range just… right there. I mean, you’ve seen mountain views in photos, but this is the kind of thing that makes you actually gasp out loud.

The resort itself feels like someone took a luxury hotel and dropped it into the middle of a bird sanctuary – which, now that I think about it, is probably exactly what happened. You’ll hear more birdsong here than traffic noise, which is saying something since most places in Himachal have that constant hum of motorcycles going up and down the hills. The rooms are spacious (way bigger than what you’d get in McLeod Ganj for the same price), and every single one faces those snow-capped peaks. I stayed in one of their suites and kept finding myself just standing on the balcony with my morning tea, watching the light change on the mountains. The spa’s actually pretty decent too – they do this thing with local herbs that left me smelling like a pine forest for hours afterward.

What really gets me about this place is how quiet it is without feeling isolated. You’re still close enough to hop down to Dharamshala for dinner or to catch a cricket match at the stadium, but far enough up that you escape all the tourist chaos around the main market areas. The staff knows their birds too – I’m not much of a birder myself, but they’ll point out species I’d never even notice. Parking’s no problem (which, trust me, matters when you’re dealing with these mountain roads), and they’re pretty flexible about late check-ins if your bus from Delhi gets delayed. The food’s solid – they do a great trout if you’re into that, and their dal is the kind that ruins you for every other dal you’ll eat afterward. Only downside is that it can get pretty booked up during peak season, and the wifi gets a bit spotty when it rains hard. But honestly, if you’re coming here to scroll through Instagram instead of watching golden eagles circle overhead, you’re probably missing the point anyway.
