Kanazawa Hakuchoro Hotel Sanraku -Natural Hot Spring-

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Hakuchoro Hotel Sanraku on Marunouchi street – the exterior is pretty understated for a five-star place. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes this spot special. It sits right there in the heart of Kanazawa’s historic district, literally a five-minute walk from the castle grounds, and somehow manages to feel like a peaceful retreat despite being so central.

The real magic happens once you’re inside, though. I mean, sure, the lobby is elegant in that refined Japanese way, but what got me was stepping into those natural hot spring baths for the first time. The water comes from actual hot springs – not just heated tap water like some places try to pass off – and after a long day wandering around Kenrokuen Garden (which, by the way, you can practically see from some of the upper floor windows), sinking into that mineral-rich water was incredible. The staff mentioned the springs have been used in this area for centuries, and you can actually feel the difference in how smooth your skin feels afterward.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to blend traditional ryokan-style hospitality with modern hotel conveniences. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, with those gorgeous tatami areas where you can actually stretch out, but they’ve also got all the tech stuff you need – solid WiFi, proper power outlets, blackout curtains that actually work. The breakfast spread deserves a mention too – they do this amazing mix of local Ishikawa seafood (the winter crab season is unreal if you’re there between November and March) alongside Western options. I’m usually pretty skeptical of hotel breakfast buffets, but theirs had me coming down early every morning. The kaiseki dinner option is pricey but worth it at least once, especially if you want to try authentic Kaga cuisine without hunting down a separate restaurant. Just be aware that the place gets pretty busy during cherry blossom season and the autumn months – I’d book well ahead if you’re planning to visit then. The service throughout my stay was consistently thoughtful without being overbearing, which can be a tough balance to strike. They remember your preferences after the first day, but they’re not hovering around constantly asking if you need anything.
