Le Grá Vineyard and Winery

42 Loopline road Opaki, 5881 Masterton, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places around the Wairarapa, but Le Grá actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. When you pull up to 42 Loopline Road (which, by the way, is way easier to find than some of the more remote vineyard stays out here), you’re not immediately overwhelmed by fancy signage or pretentious architecture. It’s this lovely, understated property that just feels… right. The check-in was refreshingly personal – no corporate script, just genuine Kiwi hospitality from people who clearly know their wine and their region.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve nailed that balance between comfort and authenticity. I mean, you’re literally staying on a working vineyard, so you wake up to actual grape vines outside your window, not some manicured hotel garden pretending to be rustic. The accommodation itself hits that sweet spot of being genuinely comfortable without trying too hard – think quality linens and proper heating (which you’ll appreciate if you’re visiting during Masterton’s cooler months) but without all the unnecessary bells and whistles that just jack up the price. The rooms have this quiet elegance that lets the surrounding landscape do the talking. And speaking of quiet – you know how some vineyard stays are right on busy roads? This isn’t one of them. Loopline Road stays pretty peaceful, even during harvest season when things get busy around the Wairarapa.
Honestly, what sold me completely was the wine experience itself. These aren’t people who just happened to open a vineyard for tourists – they actually know what they’re doing with grapes, and it shows in every glass. The tastings feel like sitting with knowledgeable friends rather than being subjected to some rehearsed sales pitch. Plus, and this is something I always notice, the staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which makes such a difference to the whole vibe. You’re about ten minutes from central Masterton if you need proper shops or restaurants, but close enough to other Wairarapa wineries that you can easily make a proper wine trail of it without dealing with crazy driving distances. I’d definitely come back – actually, I’m already planning to bring friends here next autumn when the vines start changing color. Just book ahead if you’re thinking of visiting during harvest time or any of the local wine festivals, because word is getting out about this place.

We recently stayed at La Gra Vineyard & Winery as a family – myself, my wife Stacey, and our 10-year-old son Archer – and it was absolutely unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the beauty and serenity of the place. Nestled among the vines, La Gra is more than just a vineyard – it’s a peaceful, elegant escape where every...

Super comfortable room and bathroom, great facilities and supplies, bonus: the best dog ever and lovely sheep!
I’d recommend doing the wine tasting!
What could be improved: The wifi connection was almost non existent but for our 1 night stay it was not an issue.

Newman from United Kingdom (27 March 2025)
A nicely appointed apartment situated in the Le Gra vineyard. Hosts were welcoming and invited us to try their wine experience and flight of 9 wines. The food was exceptional along with the wines. The. scenery around the vineyard is stunning.

Excellent location and friendly hosts. We loved sampling the wines!
What could be improved: The description online is a little misleading. It sounds as though the room comes with a bottle of wine, not that you can buy wine and have it in the room.
Nova from New Zealand (8 March 2025)
Beautiful people and beautiful stay can’t wait to come back and just relax
What could be improved: That I didn’t stay long enough
