Sometimes that translated into excellent service (they’re used to keeping lots of people happy), but I’ll be honest, weekend evenings can get pretty lively if there’s a big celebration happening. The walls aren’t exactly soundproof, so maybe pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

What I really appreciated was how the staff treated me like I belonged there, not like some tourist they needed to manage. The front desk guy – I think his name was Raj – actually gave me directions to this amazing little temple nearby that I never would’ve found otherwise. And the housekeeping was surprisingly thorough; they even folded my scattered clothes, which was both embarrassing and sweet. The rooms themselves are solidly three-star – nothing that’ll blow your mind, but clean sheets, working AC (crucial in Chennai heat), and a bathroom where everything actually works. The breakfast spread leans heavy on South Indian options, which honestly is exactly what you want when you’re in Tamil Nadu. Their sambar was better than some restaurants I’ve tried.

Parking is actually a breeze here, which anyone who’s driven in Chennai will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The location might not scream “luxury resort,” but it’s got that authentic neighborhood feel where you can walk to the local market in the morning and come back with the best mangoes you’ve ever tasted for like fifty rupees. Plus, if you need to get into the city proper, the transport connections aren’t terrible – though I’d still recommend having the hotel call you an auto-rickshaw rather than trying to flag one down yourself.

Look, this isn’t going to be your Instagram-perfect infinity pool situation, but it’s got something more valuable – it feels real. The 7.7 rating makes total sense to me because it delivers exactly what it promises without trying to be something it’s not. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to experience Chennai beyond the typical tourist bubble, and you don’t mind the occasional wedding procession soundtrack, Mermaid Resort might just surprise you. Just maybe avoid booking during peak wedding season unless you’re into that whole celebratory atmosphere – which, honestly, can be pretty magical if you’re in the right mood.
