The location might not scream “luxury resort,” but it’s got that authentic neighborhood feel where you can walk to the local market in the morning and come back with the best mangoes you’ve ever tasted for like fifty rupees. Plus, if you need to get into the city proper, the transport connections aren’t terrible – though I’d still recommend having the hotel call you an auto-rickshaw rather than trying to flag one down yourself.

Look, this isn’t going to be your Instagram-perfect infinity pool situation, but it’s got something more valuable – it feels real. The 7.7 rating makes total sense to me because it delivers exactly what it promises without trying to be something it’s not. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to experience Chennai beyond the typical tourist bubble, and you don’t mind the occasional wedding procession soundtrack, Mermaid Resort might just surprise you.
