Look, I’ll be straight with you about Mount n Mist – it’s one of those places that grows on you, though it might not blow you away at first glance. Tucked away on Nagchoon Road, it’s actually in a pretty sweet spot where you can still hear the town buzz but aren’t drowning in tourist chaos. The building itself has that slightly weathered hill station charm that’s either endearing or concerning, depending on your travel style (I lean toward endearing, honestly).

What really surprised me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area – like, they’ll tell you which chai stall has the best view of the valley, not just hand you a generic tourist map. The rooms are, well, what you’d expect from a solid 3-star place. Nothing fancy, but the beds are decent and you know what? The hot water actually works, which isn’t always a given in Ooty during the cooler months. I mean, the décor is stuck somewhere in the early 2000s, but the windows frame the misty hills pretty beautifully, especially if you snag one of the upper floor rooms facing away from the road.

Here’s the thing about this place – it’s got character in ways that matter. The dining area serves up surprisingly good South Indian breakfast, and they don’t rush you out even when it gets busy during peak season. Parking is tight but manageable, and you’re close enough to the main market area that you can actually walk there without huffing and puffing up those steep Ooty streets. The evenings get wonderfully quiet, with just the occasional sound of auto-rickshaws puttering by and maybe some laughter from the terrace area where people tend to gather with their evening tea. It’s not going to win any design awards – the 6.7 rating probably reflects some of the quirks like the slightly temperamental WiFi and the fact that housekeeping sometimes forgets to replace the towels – but there’s something honest about the place. If you’re looking for Instagram-perfect luxury, keep scrolling. But if you want a comfortable base to explore Ooty without breaking the bank, and you appreciate places with a bit of local soul over corporate polish, Mount n Mist does the job pretty well.
