Pench Jungle Camp Overview
You know what? I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Pench Jungle Camp in Avarghani village – honestly, the dirt road leading there had me wondering if I’d taken a wrong turn somewhere. But then you round that last bend and suddenly there’s this surprisingly polished camp nestled right at the edge of Pench National Park, and it all makes sense. The location is actually perfect if you’re serious about wildlife viewing (which, let’s face it, is the whole point of coming to Seoni district). You’re literally minutes from the park gates, so you can roll out of bed and be on a safari without that brutal early morning drive that kills you at other places.
The tents – and I mean proper safari tents, not those flimsy things you’d take camping – are scattered around the property with enough space between them that you’re not hearing your neighbors’ conversations. Mine had this massive wooden deck where I spent way too much time just listening to the jungle sounds. The night chorus here is incredible, by the way. Peacocks calling at dawn, langurs chattering in the trees, and if you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you feel about it), you might hear a leopard’s territorial call echoing through the forest. The staff mentioned that elephants sometimes wander through the area during monsoon season, though I didn’t see any during my October visit.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic jungle camp vibe while still delivering proper comfort – the bathrooms are actually nice, the food is way better than it has any right to be this far from civilization, and the wifi works well enough for the essentials. The naturalist guides here really know their stuff too, which makes all the difference on game drives. My guide, Ramesh, could spot a kingfisher from about a mile away and knew exactly where the tiger family liked to hang out near the Pench River. Speaking of tigers – I mean, that’s why most people come here – the park has a decent population, and while you’re never guaranteed a sighting, your odds are pretty good if you do multiple safaris. The afternoon drives tend to be less crowded than the morning ones, just so you know. Check-in was smooth enough, though they do like to give you a pretty detailed briefing about safari timings and park rules, which honestly is helpful since the timing restrictions are pretty strict. The whole place has this relaxed but organized feel – like they’ve figured out how to make wilderness accessible without ruining what makes it special in the first place.
